The dates for this year's retreat are Thursday, August 1st through Sunday, August 4th. I have ten hotel rooms blocked off for these three nights (THURS/FRI/SAT) for the IQers. Two of these rooms have a single KING bed and the remaining eight rooms have two QUEEN beds. The rate will be the same as this year's rate ($91.99) - but still a bargain considering what they usually charge for the rooms. The conference room is reserved for us those three days (Thurs/Fri/Sat) and we are even allowed to sew on Sunday (at no charge) since we are never sure how long the last quilter(s) will be staying on Sunday!
This year's charity project is a 'FIDGET QUILT" Please make it approximately 24" x 24" (and NO MORE than 36"x36"). SENSORY is an important factor when making a fidget quilt. Here's an opportunity for you to use up some of your orphan blocks. Enhance your quilt blocks with zippers, beads, bobbles, buttons, keys, rick rack, lace, ruffles, doilies, velcro, small jingle bells, or whatever else you can think of that might keep their hands busy. (Attach the beads with ribbons and sew the ribbons into the seams for durability.) Different textures of fabrics such as corduroy, velvet, fake fur, etc. are a good idea as well. TACTILE is an important goal to keep in mind when constructing these 'Fidget Quilts'. You can even add a pocket---complete with a small stuff animal tucked inside with a ribbon attached to the animal so if it falls out it can be easily retrieved! It will be exciting to see the variety of quilt blocks & techniques used in these completed fidget quilts! I imagine we'll see a lot of creativity going into these charity projects! Can't wait!
***For our LCR game you will need to bring three 2 1/2" strips. One strip is to be BLACK on black, one strip is to be WHITE on white, and the final strip is to be a strip of BRIGHT tone on tone fabric.
***Remember to bring your NDTS (No Darker Than Sand) blocks so Diane can swap them out for all who participated: Tressa, Janice, Sandy, Jackie O, Marcia, Lynne, Diane, Marybeth, Nancy, Joyce, Linda, and Karen. You need to make twelve 12" blocks (12 1/2" unfinished) for this swap. The pattern is your choice, but the blocks should all be the same pattern. You may use different fabrics in each block if you want to use fabrics from your stash- but the pattern should be the same. Make one block for everyone- including yourself.
***For those of you participating in this year's Birthday Swap ("Ribbons" block)- you can bring Jan's blocks to the retreat and save yourself some postage! Jan's birthday is August 8th and the colors she selected for her block are: Light pink, Dark Pink, Light Gray, Dark Gray for the 'ribbons' and white on white for background
***Bring your completed MYSTERY QUILTS in which Sandy O shared clues- with assistance from Jackie O!

Thanks for all the offers, Diane. Could you possibly talk to the caterer and find some lighter meals/ lettuce or green salads etc. ? Her food tastes great but a heavy lunch leads to sleepy quilters! Soup/salad etc. would be great for one of the options with the big sandwiches or entrees etc. for those who want them. I know for some it's their big meal of the day and they don't go out for dinner. Whatever you can come up with will be appreciated :^)
Linda and I will probably go out for meals just to have a break. We will plan on being your house on Thurs, Diane. It is always good and a fun way to start the fun weekend.
Just talked with Jacque Johnson. She will be a day tripper on Friday and Saturday.
I am planning on Thursday and Friday for sure. I'll get there as soon as I can depending on the sweetcorn. Saturday will be determined closer to the date. Youngest bought a house and that is moving weekend.
just heard that lauren will be joining us as a day tripper
Glad to hear that; it's always fun to see what projects she has going. Nice that she feels comfortable enough to come without Karen.
Worked on my fidget quilt this afternoon and have 95% of the quilt top done! I bet you are wondering how I got so much done in one afternoon! Here's the secret: I used "ORPHAN BLOCKS"!!!!! Orphan blocks are those left over blocks that were extras from previous quilts I had made; as well as blocks I had made up as a sample block before sewing up my 'real' blocks! I just arranged these blocks into rows & if the rows didn't fit, I added extra strips of fabric or some sashing between the blocks! Some are snowball blocks leftover from a baby quilt, a couple are churn dash blocks left over from DGD's quilt, etc. I did have to sew up a couple new blocks for my quilt top (like another churn dash block since I was one short) and it is going to be quite a colorful (and unique) quilt! LOL I added lots of tactile elements: beads, buttons, ribbon, rick-rack, zipper, etc. I even stuffed one block with cellophane so it would make a crinkle noise! :)
I know some of you are somewhat "tested" by this challenge, but this is the third fidget quilt I've made and I really like how my creativity juices get to flowing when I'm working on this kind of project! :) So don't stress...have fun! (And use up your "Orphan Block's! )
Oh my goodness, can anything else get packed into this weekend. I have an event at church on Friday night that I need to attend so I will be needing to leave around 5. I go for weeks with nothing on the weekend and then poof everything is scheduled at once!
I've got my fidget quilt ready for binding. It's not fancy but it is done!
I have my fidget quilt finished. I used orphan blocks to ..I have my ndts blocks finished but I don't like them so am going to redo them.
Marcia ,,isn't Judy Larson coming this year?
I was also wondering about Tressa's mom Janice. Is she not coming?
Since Judy came as an "alternate" attendee last year, she graciously waits until we see how many IQ Sisters (aka- the "Regulars") will be attending our retreat. Presently, we only have 18 attendees--so yesterday I asked her if she would like to join us again at this year's retreat. It was a resounding YES!
I haven't heard from Tressa whether her mom Janice will be joining us this year. And if Janice is able to attend (which I really hope she can join us)- along with my friend Judy- we will have reached our limit of 20 attendees.
We are only one month away from the dates of our retreat....and I am really excited! Such a fun time with amazing women! IQ Retreat is the B.E.S.T.!!!!
Has anyone heard from Mary Grafe???? Wondering how she is doing and if she is planning to join us at this year's retreat. Hope all is well with Mary. Anyone know?
