Quilt With Us

I am aware that a lot of quilt patterns do not ask for pre-washing the fabric.  And I am sure that a lot of us do not do so.  I have made it a practice to pre-wash because not all the fabrics are of the same manufacturer and designers.

However, for the past few months I have been discovering that the fabrics I have been buying recently, regardless of source seem to shrink by as much as 1 inch a yard, and I do not buy cheap no-name brand fabrics.  Luckily I have washed most of the fabrics in my stash since I have purchased them from other people, but I need to buy new fabrics for backing.  Of course I buy at least a half-yard more than what I really need, and this is good because of the shrinkage. I do measure the fabrics before I wash them and write down the actual yardage. With the cost of fabric and everything else going up, I want to make sure I get my money's worth.

Does anyone seem to have this issue with new fabrics?

Thanks - Aida

Hi Aida--I, too, always pre-wash my fabrics. Since I am not good at visualizing, I purchase a lot of kits at my LQS and some pieces are too small to pre-wash, so I just dip them for awhile and then iron them when they dry. However, what bothers me more is that most of the time, these pieces are cut off grain and that causes me a lot of problems. I have become aware that our younger quilters usually do not prewash or worry about grain. Their quilts seem to look ok when finished, but I have problems with mine. I guess I'm old fashioned. There definitely is shrinkage and with off grain fabric, sometimes I do not have enough for my projects.

Anyone else have these problems?

Thank you.

Yes, the precuts are not always cut on the grain, and if you prewash them they definitely get distorted.  I wash fabrics if they are at least a quarter yard.

I also wash the quilt once it's completed to remove any quilting marks and the slight shrinkage does give it a 'worn' look.
