Darlene's Slackers Quilt Along

Love those huge sampler quilts with tiny blocks (like a Dear Jane quilt) but don't feel quite up to making one? Then this group is for you! We will be making one using larger (six inch) blocks and our quilt will have ONLY 140 blocks.

Welcome Fellow Slackers!

Not up for doing two-hundred and twenty-five 4" blocks? Then this group is for you! We will be using Jennifer Chiaverini's book, Sylvia's Bridal Sampler from Elm Creek Quilts to make ONLY (?) one-hundred and forty 6" blocks. The challenge is to have the quilt finished in one year. We will officially begin on June 15, 2009 and finish on June 15 2010, however, please join in the fun anytime. You can see that I will be making mine from our new collection Hearth & Home but you can use anything you like. This quilt is a good way to use up all your scraps and in the end you will have an amazing quilt.

I will be making the blocks in the same order as they appear in the quilt not how they are alphabetically listed in the book but you are free to make them in any order you like. Each week pictures and tips will be posted in the Discussion Forum. Since some of you will be making them in the order they appear in the book or in no particular order we will include those blocks in the discussion too. A list of each block has magically appeared and you can post your tips and/or pictures under the blocks you made. Everyone is encouraged to add tips and/or pictures of their blocks. Our only rule is that each block has to be different. Let the fun begin!

I remember that little sliding ruler thingy and skorts too. The hardest part in switching to quilting was not taking a 5/8 inch seam allowance. I kept thinking "How is a 1/4" seam allowance ever going to stay together?"

I don't know about moving from clothing to quilting, Darlene. I had a student one time that became very frustrated because of the accuracy needed in quilt making. She could not get her quarter-inches down. Insisted on using her little 6" measuring thingy (you know the one with the sliding needle that I use for hemming) to do her measurements. Did not like the rotary cutter at all. She said when she made clothes, you made them to fit and that was all you needed to know. Oh well, she did say she came out of the class with a greater appreciation for quilts, but she would stick to clothes.

I started sewing doll clothes when I was in the second grade. I didn't have patterns so I just made them up as I went along. I remember one of the neighbors even paid me fifty cents for a doll nightgown. My mother stored her sewing machine in my bedroom and I was told not to touch it. I used to open it up when she thought I was sleeping and just make the stitches by hand turning the wheel so she couldn't hear me. One night she had stacked something on the top of the machine and I had to climb up to move it, fell off the sewing machine and broke my arm. She never could figure out why I fell from the top of her sewing machine cabinet in the middle of the night. I have always loved to sew. I used to make all of our kids clothing - even bathing suits and underwear. I just liked the challenge of seeing if I could do it. I still do some clothing for our youngest daughter and sometimes for grand kids but mostly now I just do quilts. I think people who go from clothing construction to quilting have a very easy time because sewing quilts is sooooo much easier and let's face it - way more fun!

Concerning that fast start out of the gate but coming in last....isn't that why we have soooooo many UFOs????? I know that is my excuse.

Nancy/NC, I have about 60 UFO's and as many kits so yes I do have other things I could be working on.The only thing on my mind is SBS. Boy oh boy that Darlene sure started something!Patience is not my virtue, along with a few other things as my family will tell you.

LOL! I know, & I do understand, just some food for thought, I guess. I keep starting so many, it's like, hey, what's one more, right! I just need to keep making some, as my fabric is taking over my studio, I think it's multiplying at night, lol!...

Nancy/NC, you know how temptation is-it doesn't matter what you're working on, there's this little voice saying "Here I am, and I'm so delightful. Why not just go ahead and start on me? Nobody will know......" I finished cutting pieces for another quilt last night, and all the time I was cutting those pieces, I was thinking of the SBS quilt that I couldn't start on! But I will be strong and resist-I've waited this long, what's a few more hours?
Nancy/NC Comment by Nancy/NC on June 14, 2009 at 11:13am
For all of you who can't wait to start, lol, I have to ask! Don't you have other quilt projects you have been working on? Why not work on them today & avoid the temptation to start early, lol!
Nancy/NC Comment by Nancy/NC on June 14, 2009 at 11:09am
I am washing new fabrics now,had more stashed than I realized, like from that little shop hop hubby & I did recently, lol. In three more hours we are due at the party, so time is passing for me today, & rather quickly, thank goodness! Just think, come tomorrow, we will all be up to our eyeballs in as many blocks as we decide to use! So rest up today! I know what skorts are too, but not sure I ever wore any. I think I bought our GDs some recently.

I had home ec classes all through school, got totally bored with most of them, lol. I finally figured out the way to get an "A", was to do it just exactly the way the teacher did it, even if I prefered my own, more experienced way. Glad those days are over & I can make anything as fast as I choose to.

Oh, & I found some velum paper yesterday too, the kind I can run through the printer if needed. I will probably just trace them off by hand though, as we only do each block once. Then I can save these for templates, along with the book.

Deborah- you won't be far behind us all. I would suggest, if you already have other quilt books, check out what blocks are in this one, & you may find them elsewhere, & be able to go ahead & start that way. Darlene even said it can still be done without the book, as long as the finished size is 6 inches & each block is different! So, hope this helps!

Hi all. Hubby's computer is on the sick list, so he's had my laptop on the road with him this week, and I fear it will be gone again this week. I've missed "talking" with everyone!

I'm ready to go tomorrow-fabric, needle, thread, scissors, rotary cutter, mat, foundation paper, and sewing machine. I'm trying to decide between two patterns to start with. I really want to start today, but I'm going to exercise patience and try to avoid temptation! Maybe I'll go outside to get away from the temptation! Or better yet, just stay on the computer reading everyone's comments!
