Darlene's Slackers Quilt Along

Love those huge sampler quilts with tiny blocks (like a Dear Jane quilt) but don't feel quite up to making one? Then this group is for you! We will be making one using larger (six inch) blocks and our quilt will have ONLY 140 blocks.

Welcome Fellow Slackers!

Not up for doing two-hundred and twenty-five 4" blocks? Then this group is for you! We will be using Jennifer Chiaverini's book, Sylvia's Bridal Sampler from Elm Creek Quilts to make ONLY (?) one-hundred and forty 6" blocks. The challenge is to have the quilt finished in one year. We will officially begin on June 15, 2009 and finish on June 15 2010, however, please join in the fun anytime. You can see that I will be making mine from our new collection Hearth & Home but you can use anything you like. This quilt is a good way to use up all your scraps and in the end you will have an amazing quilt.

I will be making the blocks in the same order as they appear in the quilt not how they are alphabetically listed in the book but you are free to make them in any order you like. Each week pictures and tips will be posted in the Discussion Forum. Since some of you will be making them in the order they appear in the book or in no particular order we will include those blocks in the discussion too. A list of each block has magically appeared and you can post your tips and/or pictures under the blocks you made. Everyone is encouraged to add tips and/or pictures of their blocks. Our only rule is that each block has to be different. Let the fun begin!

I jumped right into quilting about six years ago now up in Calgary Alberta. Always wanted to sew something when I was younger but being the last of six kids my mom never took the time to teach me and we were allowed nowhere near her machine since we didn't know how to use it. A viscious (sp?) circle there. She did let me pick out some scrap fabric and an old skort pattern from an older sister and cut it out but there it lay and is probably still there in her "pattern drawer". Now I have wonderful Husqvarna machines (thanks to my hard working hubby) and will be teaching/helping my mom put together a quilt this summer with some appliqued butterflies she found in a drawer of craft stuff.

Depending on your time zone . . . some slackers will be starting in less than 12 hours. Linda, the newspaper idea was great! Just like a hostage situation. Remember, I have carbon dating too. I'm wondering how many people will start at midnight? That wouldn't be very slackerish - I think Karen and Judy waiting to start on Tuesday night is more like it. Remember, you can do as few or as many as you want. There are no rules (unless I want to make some up along the way).

Thank you for all the nice comments about our "Gobstopper" quilts. I think Mari will finish hers too - then we will REALLY celebrate.

I plan to start mine tomorrow sometime. We have a little going away dinner party getogether to attend tonight, & my time will be my own once hubby leaves for the work in the morning. May wash up some new fabric today & get ready. Really looking forward to all this! I learned on a old Singer will the knee pedal too, lol, that was a great machine. Think my sis has it now & she doesn't even sew, go figure! I had Singers forever, till I got my Janome Memory Craft 3000, which I still use & love, & I have a Babylock Serger, with the tubes that blow the lower threads through, to thread it all for you, except the needles. Then last Feb, I got my new Viking Sapphire 830 & am still getting to know her. I think I was around 12, 6th grade, or thereabouts, spent the weekend with a step-cousin, & her mom taught us to sew that weekend. I came home with a simple shift type dress, all ready to wear, & boy, was I ever ready to get sewing on my mom's old singer! Wasn't too long before I knew that machine better than she did!

I started sewing on my mother's threadle machine when I was quite young. She would not let us use the electric machine at an early age. She figured we would be smart enough to pedalling if we got our fingers too close to the needle. lol I've been sewing ever since, but only started quilting about 5 years ago, after I retired. Haven't stopped since... Totally addicted.... I'm ready to go tomorrow morning. Should be an interesting year.

I started sewing when I was 14. Did the same as the rest. Clothes for myself, my mother, my aunt, then my daughter, Made 2 teddy bear quilts for my nephews and they are 27 and 26 now. Started really quilting about 10 years ago. I am from a family of quilters. My grandmother made 6 quilts for each of her daughters for when they got married. She had 6 daughters. Then I had one aunt that continued on the craft. That is why I started,So it would continue on in the family and now I love it.

I have ny fabric picked and on the table for the first 3 blocks.Seriosly considering starting at 12:01!

Have a good day everyone.

So where are these quilts you refer to? I'm new to this site and this process. While I am signed up, is there somewhere to review how this is going to work.

Well, I started sewing with my best friend, Lolly, when we were five. We hand sewed Barbie clothes on my porch. I started making clothes sometime later, my Mom had a Kenmore that was probably from the late 40's. I have it now, and keep telling myself I am going to get it tuned up and new belts so I can use it. I started quilting about 10 years ago, my DS and I started quilting at the same time. I wonder what Lolly is doing now???
I think I have decided on my fabrics for the 54-40 square, is that cheating? I hope not, because I am planning to start late. Especially since I said something stupid and made Darlene think I had started already! There's no telling what I said! I will take pics of the fabric with the newspaper or something to show that I did not cheat! LOL.
Happy quilting!

Good Morning! Its 12:40 am and I finally finished catching up. One day put me 6 pages behind! (I'm getting myself ready for the Sunday [or should I say, Monday] 12:01 am start time!)

Judy & Darlene ~ beautiful quilts! I've decided that I'm not going to be a slacker with the SBS. I'm so disappointed that I didn't get my Gobstopper done (whine, whine) that I'm not going to let that happen again.

I want to respond to so many comments in the last 6 pages but, frankly, I now can't remember who said what!!! Well, tension is rising for the 15th which is tomorrow! Get out those rotary cutters and rev up your engines........ varoom, varoom

The Gobstopper quilts are absolutely gorgeous! You are all very talented ladies and the pattern was a great one. Darlene, your quilting is incredible! Great work all of you!!!

I learned to sew shortly before my 12th birthday, which was almost 48 years ago now. Most of the time I made clothing over the years, though I did make gifts for other people as well, using a rotary cutter and mat when they came out. About 15 years ago I taught myself to quilt after watching a "Quilt In A Day" program on tv and realizing that I could do it! Now I hardly ever do any sewing except for quilts.

Is it midnight Sunday night yet???
