Darlene's Slackers Quilt Along

Love those huge sampler quilts with tiny blocks (like a Dear Jane quilt) but don't feel quite up to making one? Then this group is for you! We will be making one using larger (six inch) blocks and our quilt will have ONLY 140 blocks.

Welcome Fellow Slackers!

Not up for doing two-hundred and twenty-five 4" blocks? Then this group is for you! We will be using Jennifer Chiaverini's book, Sylvia's Bridal Sampler from Elm Creek Quilts to make ONLY (?) one-hundred and forty 6" blocks. The challenge is to have the quilt finished in one year. We will officially begin on June 15, 2009 and finish on June 15 2010, however, please join in the fun anytime. You can see that I will be making mine from our new collection Hearth & Home but you can use anything you like. This quilt is a good way to use up all your scraps and in the end you will have an amazing quilt.

I will be making the blocks in the same order as they appear in the quilt not how they are alphabetically listed in the book but you are free to make them in any order you like. Each week pictures and tips will be posted in the Discussion Forum. Since some of you will be making them in the order they appear in the book or in no particular order we will include those blocks in the discussion too. A list of each block has magically appeared and you can post your tips and/or pictures under the blocks you made. Everyone is encouraged to add tips and/or pictures of their blocks. Our only rule is that each block has to be different. Let the fun begin!

I'm not very good at it, but one of the ladies in our local club is very good at it and she is going to teach that one...

Oh that's good! I need to learn applique one of these days.....I love the look of it....just don't have a clue on how to do it!

Yeah, at the end we will be putting all nine blocks together to make a quilt. We'll have a 9-patch, friendship star, hour-glasses, Ohio star, rail fence, Which-way (arrows), hearts all around, grandmothers flower garden, orange peel variation blocks...

That's cool that you will have a friend over to sew the bags.....that's always so much more fun! The classes sound nice....will you actually be working on a project along with those techniques? I am looking forward to getting down to Kansas where I will be closer to the action ;0)

I'm hoping I get inspired soon Maryam... I got the fabric cut for the bags I'm going to make my in-laws done today. My neighbor is going to make one for herself and one for her mother-in-law and so we are going to have a sew day hopefully soon!!! Anyway, think I may actually try to draft a couple of the T-shirt quilt blocks tomorrow... I've been very busy with our club as well, so I'm getting a bit overwhelmed!! I started a quilting class that meets once a month and each month we cover a different technique. This month (last weekend) was a nine-patch block (straight sewing).. next month is half-square triangles, then quarter square triangles, then flying geese, then strip piecing, then paper piecing, then applique, then english paper-piecing, then curves. The last 3 months of the class schedule are for sashing/cornerstones and borders, quilting techniques (hand and machine) and binding. We have 12 people that are taking the class and so far everyone is enjoying it.

I got my Kaleidoscope Kreator 3 program in the mail today!!! I am pretty excited about that....but I will try to resist playing with it too much as I REALLY wanna get these blocks done! I will do my best to get at least 2 or maybe 3 blocks done tomorrow. Honest!

DH talked to his manager and he does have Monday off! Thank goodness! I am sure his head will be spinning!!! You are right...his family does appreciate him coming home. Today he was taking his sisters and nephew to apply for a visitors visa. It's a big expense....but nothing compared to the tickets when it comes time for those!!!! It's okay though....I am excited about them coming for a visit and having real sisters to share everything with for a few months.....not to mention hugging my little nephew!

Hi Maryam,
I hope you have a good Thanksgiving Day as your DH will be home the next day. I know it has been a long time for him to be away but it is so nice that he was able to go and see his family. I know how much him coming means to them!

We will be praying for a safe trip for you and him and I hope he can get Monday off also to catch back up on our time zone! Jet lag is no fun at all no matter how much you go through it! Get lots of blocks sewn! Your blocks are so beautiful. Our quilt shops are having lots of sales on Friday. I'm trying not to go as I just have too much fabric to make up and a lady gave me three BIG bags of red, white and blue scraps Saturday and I need to figure out a good scrapy way to use all my scraps for quilts! I'm think of making them into string quilts but have never done that before so a little nervous about it. We shall see. I've got to get off to bed. I know I can sleep in tomorrow morning but that is no excuse for staying up way so late.

Karen, I think the kitchen witches would probably work for my DILs... I could put my picture on it.... LOL!!! I love my DILs... sometimes I think they think I'm too pushy!!! Just want my kids to be happy!!!

I saw many beautiful blocks... after Christmas I should be able to get back to it... As for the Harley Blocks I haven't touched them since football started... I'm planning on getting back to them next week... I have 13 to go...
