Darlene's Slackers Quilt Along

Love those huge sampler quilts with tiny blocks (like a Dear Jane quilt) but don't feel quite up to making one? Then this group is for you! We will be making one using larger (six inch) blocks and our quilt will have ONLY 140 blocks.

Welcome Fellow Slackers!

Not up for doing two-hundred and twenty-five 4" blocks? Then this group is for you! We will be using Jennifer Chiaverini's book, Sylvia's Bridal Sampler from Elm Creek Quilts to make ONLY (?) one-hundred and forty 6" blocks. The challenge is to have the quilt finished in one year. We will officially begin on June 15, 2009 and finish on June 15 2010, however, please join in the fun anytime. You can see that I will be making mine from our new collection Hearth & Home but you can use anything you like. This quilt is a good way to use up all your scraps and in the end you will have an amazing quilt.

I will be making the blocks in the same order as they appear in the quilt not how they are alphabetically listed in the book but you are free to make them in any order you like. Each week pictures and tips will be posted in the Discussion Forum. Since some of you will be making them in the order they appear in the book or in no particular order we will include those blocks in the discussion too. A list of each block has magically appeared and you can post your tips and/or pictures under the blocks you made. Everyone is encouraged to add tips and/or pictures of their blocks. Our only rule is that each block has to be different. Let the fun begin!

sometimes I use a little bitty piece of tape out of the way from where I will be sewing the seam...then once the piece is secured, I take the tape off before I iron it.

I don't know Neta....the more I look at it....the more I think I should have put the lighter greenish/brown where the darker one is and vice versa. I think that would be better. sigh.......but not today.

Maryam, that block is great! How DO you do it? Barbi, I've gotten so I pin the pieces when I'm PPing! It helps to make sure you have the right piece in the right place and YES it is backwards to me everytime I do it but after doing some, I'm learning and getting there. They're definitely NOT my favorites! Keep trying!

Barbi, for the half-square triangle units for the crow's foot, cut a square that is 2.5 inches, then cut once on the diagonal. That should give you the coverage you need and at the right angle.

For the claws on the Crow Foot the sections were one inch...I cut two inches pieces and it really didn't waste much...now if I can just get the angles covered sufficiently...its backwards to me...so I rip, rip, rip....

I have started cutting wide strips, then cutting off what I think I will need for a particular piece. Thinking bigger seems to help me too, when it comes to paper piecing...
