Quilt With Us

We certainly accomplished a LOT with the "Stash Buster and UFO Basher" last year, so I will be organizing a similar activity this year!  However this year, we will be focusing entirely on shrinking our stash.  An additional change this year is that we will be doing it on a MONTHLY basis.  There will be a small prize for each monthly winner.  But...there will also be a GRAND prize for the gal who is the overall monthly winner at the end of the year!  So this year, it will be little steps (monthly) to master a huge accomplishment:  BUST THE STASH!!!!

In 2012 we will be focusing on trimming down our stash.  You know how many resolutions involve weight loss and slimming down?!  Well, instead of working on our body...we are going to work on our stash!!! lol   To be a member of this group you are encouraged to USE THE FABRIC IN YOUR STASH that was purchased prior to January 1, 2012.  You may start new projects or finish old projects- but choose the fabrics from your stash. (Anything purchased during this 2012 year canNOT be counted as part of your stash!)  You will need to keep track of how much fabric you use out of your stash each month.  The easiest way to do this is measure your fabric piece before you use it in a project and then measure your fabric piece after you are done using it.  That will help you determine how much fabric you have used! Even easier-if you use only fabric from your stash for your quilt, the pattern you are using will tell your yardage. Who wants to join me on this quest to shrink our waistlines...er, I mean stashes???

I know several of you who have that competitive edge and will be enticed by this challenge! Sometimes a task (e.g. shrinking your stash) can be better accomplished with a 'support group' cheering you on!  "YOU CAN DO IT!"- yelled while shaking my pom-poms (how's that for support?)!!!

So, let's take it one month at a time!  Tell us about the project you are working on that is helping you deplete your stash.  You are encouraged to post pictures of your projects!  And remember to post the yardage you use from your stash each time you complete a project!!!  (YES, a quilt top will count as a completed project- even though it is not quilted!  Oh- and don't forget to count the yardage you used to prepare a backing for the quilt top!)  Remember:  you cannot count any newly purchased fabrics for your project....ONLY what you use from your stash.

If you need to buy some fabric to complete a project...we promise we will not bully or intimidate you!  Our goal is to see how long we can go without purchasing fabric and to see how much fabric we can use up from our own stash!

GO, STASH BUSTERS, GO!!!!

Formula to help you figure yardage of your project:  multiply number of inches for width  times the number of inches for length and then divide it by 1,296 inches (which is a square yard: 36" x 36").

WIDTH x LENGTH divided by 1,296 = your total yardage!

Diane, some of the blocks have the same fabric on either side of the 4-patches and some others have different fabrics...is that the way it is supposed to be for some light/dark blocks, or does it matter?

Ur right jackie there is a pattern to the blocks
Andrea you are too funny! Good eye spying my fabrics from other projects!

I'm such a slacker!!!!!  Check out those totals up above....

Deb, I'm the queen of slackers! I won't be one of the biggest stash busters but at least belonging to this group makes me think about it! lol!

Marcia, I am finishing up the scrappy quilt.  Just have 1 side to sew down the binding.  I'll get it measured and post the yardage yet tonight.  Can't let the month go by with nothing to report.  I also have been making hangers for the backs of the quilts I'm entering in the guild quilt show.  I have 3 of 8 done.  I have a week to finish up the other 5.  I don't ever put hangers on the back as I have never entered any in shows.  New adventure for me.

I finished the quilt binding!!  The total for the quilt is 6.3 yards.  The hangers total .5 yard making my total for the month 6.8 yards.  Not too much, but it is out of my stash!!!  I'll take a picture tomorrow and post it.  Sandy, beware - it is scrappy!!!

Jan, How are they hanging quilts at your show? Are you putting hanging sleeves on  them? At our show,we hang them  with those clip-on pants hangers and the hook of the hanger hooks over the railing of the dividers. I would hate to have to put hanging sleeves on a queen size quilt! Can't wait to see your scrappy quilt-I am getting to love scrappy! I have a couple of magazines with scrappy designs in them.

Here is the Scrappy Quilt as promised. It is about 50 x 70.

They are hanging the quilts on rods, I think, Pat.  I really don't know - just know they said we needed sleeves on the backs.

It definitely is scrappy, Jan, but I love it!!!  The design reminds me of the Courthouse Steps pattern!  Great way to use up those strips!  That's an easy enough pattern to figure out the measurements for the pieces used in each block that I could probably sew it up without having to buy the pattern! :)  Did you use 2 1/2" strips for your blocks?   This one sure is a true scrappy quilt!  It's a fun pattern filled with fun fabrics!  :)

As I was totaling up the yardage for March and I was disappointed I hadn't posted any yardage.  Then I realized:  I had made 14 mug rugs for the other attendees of the retreat I had attended the beginning of March.  That means I used 1.25 yds of fabric!  YEA!  I also thought about the project I had worked on during that retreat (my blue & white quilt)- but I realized I had not added a border to it nor had I gotten the backing out of my stash yet.  Guess that will be yardage I can post for April!

WHEW-at least I got a little yardage posted for March!!!!!!  ;^)

DRUM ROLL please.....the March Stash Busting Queen is DIANE!  She used a total of 70.46 yards from her stash this past month.  Pat A. gave her a run for her money since she had used 35.06 yards of fabric from her stash!  Guess that means Pat would be the March Stash Busting Princess!!!  lol

The total yardage used in March by the members in this challenge was 135.21!!!  Can you believe that number??!!  Holy-Moly!  That's a lot of fabric!  You gals amaze me!  At this rate we will be well over a thousand by the end of the year!  Keep a sewing, ladies!  We'll get these stashes BASHED!  :)

A door a doodle done = 1.12 yds.
