Quilt With Us

While I'm still in a holding pattern, waiting for thumb surgery, I'm not getting much quilting done. Here's a photo of one of my finished objects, though:

This one took nine months to complete. Six months for the piecing and three for the quilting. I grew up with '30s fabrics, and feel a certain amount of nostalgia for them. When I get back to hand-quilting again, I'll post photos of some new stuff. --P

wow, totally a beautiful quilt, lots of work, but well worth it, is gorgeous.reminds me of stepping into grandmas bedroom she had set up when us grandkids came to stay.. how did you sew on all those tiny pieces? no wonder you need thumb surgery. ha ha ha, just a great masterpiece

Ruthann: Thanks. The need for thumb surgery isn't a result of quilting or knitting (which I also do). Actually, My orthopedist says that all the hand work has probably postponed the need for it. My mother had trouble with her thumbs at a much younger age. It's caused by osteoarthritis, and is much more common in women. I've already had the left one done, and that was a success. Now I need the right one done. Then, back to hand quilting! --P

Peggy, I'm assuming that this was done via EPP, and all by hand. It's quite lovely and DEFINITELY a ton of work. Great quilt!

Actually, I used Quilt Patis, but it's the same idea. They're plastic, and you just take a little tuck in each corner all the way around and then an addition st in the first corner, stranding the thread from one corner to the next. I think it might be a little faster. Otherwise, it works the same. And yes, it was all done by hand. Halfway through I was cursing myself for committing to the undertaking, but now I love it. It was fun to do, actually, although there were moments, LOL! --P

Hi Peggy, What is Quilt Patis? or EPP? These are new terms for this quilter.

These are a lot of work, just finishing up the top of one myself. (the last flower is almost ready to be added to the quilt. Then of course there is the layering and quilting. How did you quilt yours?
The colors are beautiful. The whole quilt is beautiful!

Jackie: You can find out all about Quilt Patis here. EPP = English Paper Piecing. What method are you using for your quilt? --P

It is beautiful and you must of worked night and day on it. I have made several of them and they are a lot of work. Thanks for sharing.

This is a very beautiful quilt.Thank you for sharing how long it took . I often look at something as gorgeous as your quilt and wonder if I could do it.Now I know I could BUT I'd have to plan on doing nothing else for many many months! I know I'm repeating myself BUT WOW!

Thanks, Diane! It was really portable for a long time, so that helped, but next time I would do a crib-size quilt, LOL! --P

Diane, I agree with you 10 Xs fold that the quilt is beautiful. But you could do it! Do it in small amounts if that is easier for you. It is a GREAT quilt to carry to anywhere and work on it. It can fit into a plastic sandwich bag in you purse to make all the flowers. Try it. You may be surprise at yourself. This is how my quilt is being done and yes, it has taken longer than 9 months to do it. But keep in mind that other quilts are being done at the same time. I'm quilty of having a lot a quilts going at once, but I'm trying to break this habit.. Honest.
