Quilt With Us

Mystery Quilt 2014

To celebrate National Quilt Month in March, Connecting Threads will offer a Mystery Quilt 2014 Quilt Along. This is our second Mystery Quilt and promises to be lots of fun for all. We think you will enjoy making this three-part pattern. The catch is that you won’t know what the quilt looks like until Part 3!

What are the dates of the quilt along?
Parts 1-3 & Parts 1-3 Notes - Now available below in Discussion Forum & Quick Links
Conclusion - Wednesday, April 9th

What is the size of the finished quilt? It will be a lap quilt or throw, approximately 52-1/2" x 64-1/2".

What are the fabric requirements?
See Fabric Selection Suggestions PDF

Backing - You will need an additional 3-1/2 yards. If you use 104" wide backing, you will need 1-3/4 yds for 4" all around or 2 yards for 8" all around...for longarm quilting.

Where will I find the pattern?
The Mystery Quilt 2014 pattern is written in three parts. Each week's pattern and related tutorials will be available as PDF downloads in the Quick Link section and Discussion Forum below.

What is the skill level of this quilt?
Based on CT pattern ratings, the quilt is on the border between easy and intermediate. This would not be a good first quilt. Having said that, it is an instructional pattern with detailed notes and photos for each step to aide successful completion. A confident beginner, with experience sewing 1/4" seams, may find the quilt a challenge but doable.

How do I select my fabric?
The difficulty with a mystery quilt is selecting fabric when you don’t know what you are making. You may select from the CT fabrics in the Fabric Selection Suggestions PDF or choose your own using the combinations as guidelines for light, medium and dark value placement. The fabrics in the handout were available as of 3/4/14. If a fabric is not available when you order, you will have to choose something else or substitute from your stash.

Any special tools required?
81639 Omnigrip Neon  6-1/2" Square Ruler. (optional)

I am a long time member of "Quilting With Us" (QWU). I used to give virtual workshops here. Like many others, I have ventured out as QWU became more quiet.

We are getting the warning that QWU is at risk of being disabled. I fear this is a sign that QWU will one day be no more.

It has become like family here and the thought of losing the friendships we have developed has giving me a sad heart. Like many dark clouds, there is a silver lining. When I ventured out, I created a quilters social network, much like QWU. I never mentioned it, for it was a conflict of interest. However, in this dark hour, it is time to let others know there is an alternative. It does not have to end here.

I would be honored for QWU members to join "Pattern Pastiche". If needed, we are more than happy to create a group for your new home.

Ann...this is awesome news!  I made the two previous ones and had a lot of fun with them.  I like that the time frame is short and we have a completed top quickly.  Can't wait to get to March 2nd so that I can pick my fabrics....lol

To celebrate National Quilt Month in March, Connecting Threads will offer a Quilt with Us (QWU). This is our third Mystery Quilt - yes we skipped 2015. I'm sorry - we did something else last year to celebrate. The response to the past two Mystery Quilt Quilt Alongs was quite positive with big groups following on Notions and on Quilt with Us (QWU) - and this one promises to be lots of fun as well. We think you will enjoy making this fun three-part pattern, suitable for confident beginner and experienced quilters. The catch is that you won’t know what the quilt looks like until Part 3!

Blog Schedule on Notions and QWU:
3/2 - Mystery Quilt 2016 -Fabric Selection (Wednesday)
3/16 - Mystery Quilt 2016 - Part 1 (Wednesday)
3/23 - Mystery Quilt 2016 - Part 2 (Wednesday)
3/30 - Mystery Quilt 2016 - Part 3 (Wednesday)
4/6 - Mystery Quilt 2016 - Conclusion (Wednesday)

I hope to see many of you return for Mystery Quilt 2016 Quilt Along.

You can join the group now! See ya soon!

I am in for the 2015 mystery whenever you get ready, Ann.  I love last year's so much.  It is going to my nephew for his wedding in April!

Count me in for another mystery 2015 whenever you have the time Ann.  I enjoyed last years so very much!

I will be checking back for the next mystery. Can not wait but I do have enough to do right now.

Hello Ann - I did enjoy the 2013 and 2014 as well...now, after three years of 'almost know how to quilt' time gone by, I am looking forward to one for 2015!

Comment by Paula Hedges on April 2, 2015 at 10:28am

Ann, Bonny saidit all - ditto for me!

Comment by Bonny Peters on April 2, 2015 at 9:12am

Ann - No rush for I have plenty on my plate. I did, however, really enjoy the 2013 and 2014 versions and was hopeful there'd be a 2015 version. Thank you for your efforts on our behalf. I'll wait patiently for the announcement for the 2015 mystery comfortable in knowing there will be one. Thank you again.
