Mystery Quilt 2014

To celebrate National Quilt Month in March, Connecting Threads will offer a Mystery Quilt 2014 Quilt Along. This is our second Mystery Quilt and promises to be lots of fun for all. We think you will enjoy making this three-part pattern. The catch is that you won’t know what the quilt looks like until Part 3!

What are the dates of the quilt along?
Parts 1-3 & Parts 1-3 Notes - Now available below in Discussion Forum & Quick Links
Conclusion - Wednesday, April 9th

What is the size of the finished quilt? It will be a lap quilt or throw, approximately 52-1/2" x 64-1/2".

What are the fabric requirements?
See Fabric Selection Suggestions PDF

Backing - You will need an additional 3-1/2 yards. If you use 104" wide backing, you will need 1-3/4 yds for 4" all around or 2 yards for 8" all around...for longarm quilting.

Where will I find the pattern?
The Mystery Quilt 2014 pattern is written in three parts. Each week's pattern and related tutorials will be available as PDF downloads in the Quick Link section and Discussion Forum below.

What is the skill level of this quilt?
Based on CT pattern ratings, the quilt is on the border between easy and intermediate. This would not be a good first quilt. Having said that, it is an instructional pattern with detailed notes and photos for each step to aide successful completion. A confident beginner, with experience sewing 1/4" seams, may find the quilt a challenge but doable.

How do I select my fabric?
The difficulty with a mystery quilt is selecting fabric when you don’t know what you are making. You may select from the CT fabrics in the Fabric Selection Suggestions PDF or choose your own using the combinations as guidelines for light, medium and dark value placement. The fabrics in the handout were available as of 3/4/14. If a fabric is not available when you order, you will have to choose something else or substitute from your stash.

Any special tools required?
81639 Omnigrip Neon  6-1/2" Square Ruler. (optional)

Ann, thank you for the wonderful mystery quilts. I've always been afraid to try one, but this one was so great, I've started the belated 2013 mystery. Thanks again for making this so comfortable and fun to do. Hope you do one next year, I will be there.

I finished my mystery quilt and it is gorgeous!!  I'll try taking a picture later this PM.  Already have my backing fabric too.

I do have to say this quilt went together exceptionally well!  Everything matched to the tee!  I love it when quilts come together like that!  Ann, you did a fabulous job of designing this quilt!!  Thank you!!  I already got fabrics to make another!

I just finished putting the borders on. Looks good although more contrast would have been nice.

I'll try to post photo on that page later.
