Mystery Quilt 2016 Quilt Along

Information

Mystery Quilt 2016 Quilt Along

To celebrate National Quilt Month in March, Connecting Threads will offer a Mystery Quilt 2016 Quilt Along. This is our third Mystery Quilt - yes, we skipped 2015 - and promises to be lots of fun for all. We think you will enjoy making this three-part pattern. The catch is that you won’t know what the quilt looks like until Part 3!

What are the dates of the quilt along?
3/2 - MQ2016 - Fabric Selection
3/16 - MQ2016 - Part 1
3/23 - MQ2016 - Part 2
3/30 - MQ2016 - Part 3
4/6 - MQ2016 - Conclusion

What is the size of the finished quilt? It will be a lap quilt or throw, approximately 57-1/2" x 69-1/2".

Where will I find the pattern?
Each week's pattern and related tutorials will be available as PDF downloads in the Quick Link section and Discussion Forum below.

What is the skill level of this quilt?
Borderline of Easy/Intermediate. This would not be a good first quilt. A confident beginner, with experience sewing 1/4" seams, may find the quilt a challenge but doable.

How do I select my fabric?
Mystery Quilt 2016 Fabric Selection Suggestions Revised 3-3-16 PDF

Any special tools required?
General quilting supplies
81639 Omnigrip Neon  6-1/2" Square Ruler (optional)

I am going to have to hit my stash for this one.  I have 2 orders so far on the way from Connecting Threads but ordered sale items both times - first a stack of FQs to use in another project - 365 challenge and a backing for a wedding quilt first order and 2 more backings yesterday - on sale.  Wish I had waited until yesterday for the wedding quilt backing - would have been cheaper!!!  There might be a bit of grumbling around here if I send in a 3rd order for this Mystery.  I don't think I have enough of any of the suggested fabrics, but probably can put together  6 use-able fabrics.

Thanks Ann!! But Oh Dear!! 28 flying geese . . . those birds are not my friend :(

I'm starting out behind already. Can't get to sewing until I finish proofreading a 100+ page dissertation.  But lucky me . . . I got my sewing machine back from repair today, so it's ready and raring to go!!

Thanks, Ann!  Found a yellow in my stash that works great.  I think I will have to do a different quilt that features Holly a bit more!

Jo - Way to go! I am glad you were able to get the Christmas version fabrics on sale - since it was your idea! :)

Ann- I ordered fabric again (40% off) for the Christmas quilt and the baby quilt..........since there was a fabulous sale. Almost got two for the price of one.

What is happening Jean? Did you try to download in the Discussion Forum and the Quick Links to PDFs?

I am already playing detective with the clues. I am working on an idea sheet based on some of the helps Ann is giving to others about their fabric choices. Gotta get to work on the current projects so that by the time the final clue is unveiled I can start poking on my mystery which will no longer be a mystery.

Thanks Bonnie and Diane W. It is my pleasure. I am excited too.

I got my fabric order yesterday also. Thought  I would join in a make another one...we will see how that goes! I chose from the Quilter's Candy Basics to make a Christmas quilt...They are in order #1-6. Thanks to Jo G. for the idea! I am sorry I didn't think of this for the fabric selections guide... oh well!

Sharon - What cute fabrics! I think your placements work for the most part. I struggled to decide what to suggest for the two blue prints with Holly Hobby on them. Either would work for #5. If the tossed Hollys is #2 like  you have, she will be cut up a lot. I think this is what I would recommend - it involves switching the pattern a bit.

Fabric 1  Cream with small blue print
Fabric 2  Green with dots
Fabric 3  A yellow or medium tonal to coordinate with the other fabrics
Fabric 4  Black print
Fabric 5  Holly Hobby - tossed
Fabric 6  Small hearts all over
Add a Fabric 7 (rows of Holly Hobby) and use for Fabric 5 M and Fabric 6 N in Part 3. Be sure to cut one N diagonally one way and the other diagonally the opposite direction.

Hope this helps!
