Hi ptracker.  Pinwheels are pretty easy once you remember to press all of your seam allowances in the same direction.

happy 2012 top all. hope there are people still here.. well this year going to get some ufos finished that i started and try to get 6 quilts done by next xmas...i want to make one for my son and use pinwheels but i have never made a pinwheel block yet so i am learning

I'm working on pinwheels and I find your instructions, inspiration (photos, ideas...) and tips most useful. Being in Spain, I did not know what a scant quarter was, now I know it and keep perfecting my techniques. Thanks to you all, again. I'll post a picture of the 2 quilts I'm making right now (both pinwheels) when they are finished.

Thank you all for you nice comments. I will be making more pinwheel blocks for other projects. When you look at them they just make me smile. The wallhanging is a 32" sq. I will donate it for our "Airing of the Quilts" held by the Tall Pines Quilt Guild in Huntsville Texas. We have an airing like Sister's , outdoors on the square. Quilts are hung all aroung the courthouse and all the steets and buildings. A grand event. Keep on stitching.....

MaryAnn, I like your quilt. How large is it?

Paullette, if you started with a 5 3/8-inch square then you should be getting the correct size result. When you are sewing the diagonal seams, try to sew a threads width toward the seam allowance side of the HST (often referred to as a scant quarter). Then measure your pressed HST blocks to make sure they each measure 4.5-inches before you sew them together to make your nine-inch finished (9.5" raw/unfinished) blocks.

To help with ruler slippage, you can purchase some small sand-paper dots that adhere to the bottom of your ruler to keep it from slipping. There are also some other products on the market to help with with slippage. Some of the newer rulers also claim to be non-slip.
--Also, make sure you are putting enough pressure on the ruler with your hand. If you place your small/pinky finger along the outer edge so that it touches the fabric, you can have more control. Try to keep your hand holding the ruler pretty close to the length you will be cutting, in other words, if I am cutting a long strip, I will move my hand up the ruler as I cut the long strip, trying not to over extend my reach.
