It depends on the pattern and the fabric. It can pucker a bit, so the lining is often the better choice, but if the outer needs stabilizing, then it is great for that too.
Maregold Comment by Maregold 1 day ago
Do you fuse the lining or the outer fabric, Becky Ray?

I love to use Decor Bond by Pellon in my bags. It is fusible to one side and gives a nice body to the fabric. I buy mine at Walmart for a good price, otherwise, watch for a sale on interfacing at Hancock's or Joanne's.

Faux Leather is another option - I have used it - it sews like a hot knife through butter!! You cannot press it but it doesn't need any!! You can add batting (not fusible) and quilt it too!! I've also used corduroy and upholstry fabrics - they do need to be stabilized - I use a lightweight to medium fusible interfacing in the lining and fisuble batting - works great!

Thanks for your input to my question. I hadn't thought about upholstery fabric before......it sounds pretty interesting! And also the mole skin. Quilters are such inventive people!

i've used it for several purses. i stablized it on a fusible and did machine quilt it, then cut out the bag pieces. the handles i used a non fusible stablizer that i threaded thru the strap after i turned it . it doesn't take heat well so use a press cloth.

I love the Steam a Seam 2 products for two sided fusible. If you plan to sew through it use the 'Lite' version. Haven't used the Dritz, so I have no idea how it is. Have not been pleased with Heat & Bond.

I have used corduroy as linings for my bags; I also used faux suede for a couple of small bags, they work nicely, but a pain when it comes to sewing everything - bag, interfacing, lining, handles etc, together. See my latest tote on my photos.

Thanks for you question Lil! It reminded that I had made a purse out of mole skin a year ago & it turned out fantastic. I bought a couple of pieces of mole skin on sale at the end of last winter and had forgotten about them. I'll have to find them & consider them for Christmas gift purses.

I just purchased a new pattern by "Wired Up Designs." It's "The Knit and Go Girl Knitting Set." Am planning to use some Amy Butler fabric that I have. The directions suggest using either canvas or interfacing in the main body. Has anyone used Dritz Interfuse? It's a double sided fusible interfacing. I am considering trying this in this project, but at $9.50 a yard for the fabric, I may play it safe and use a batt and quilt the tote.
