Alternative to traditional binding

After reading about the problems we have with the traditional narrow quilt binding (lumps, curves, keeping it even, etc) I started thinking about how I use a facing on shirt cuffs and collars, and…Continue

What's up with safety pins?

Started this discussion. Last reply by nativetexan Sep 8, 2009. 6 Replies

Can anyone give me some pointers on when/why you use safety pins to pin layers together? Is this before basting the layers together, or in place of the hand basting prior to quilting?

Baby Quilt DONE -- and even before she went off to college!

Posted on December 4, 2015 at 4:31pm 11 Comments

Adorable young couple next door had the MOST precious baby girl last April, so I started a baby quilt for her. DH insisted I finish it before she turned 10 years old. I actually finished it before her 6 month birthday! Finding all the fabrics to match the…

Checking in -- been a long time!

Hi everyone!  It's been a while, huh?  Had lots of family stuff going on, built a new garage (no new house yet but that's still the dream), and changed jobs again after 4 yrs of nutzo driving 15 miles on an 8 lane freeway twice a day. New job is 5 miles from the house, all surface streets, and I get to design website screens for the internal software team. My right brain is kicking in again after 4 years of living in my left brain with engineers all around me, so I spent an hour tonight…

Another (the last) Bargello Tree

Finally finished the wall hanging for DSIL in FL -- just about a YEAR after I started it!  I think the fabrics are ALL from CT, so it was -- of course -- a dream to cut and sew. I'm bad about not getting pix of them before I send, so now I'm on a quest to get everyone who got one of these last year to take a picture so I can post them. I can actually say I have FINISHED this extended project! On to the next...…

Week One on the NEW JOB!!!

Posted on April 22, 2010 at 4:23pm 7 Comments

Tomorrow will be the end of my first week on the new job! After some confusion about start dates (19th or 26th or May 3), the manager told me to come in this past Monday! Nice place -- they gave me a little box of Godiva chocolates as a 'starting gift', plus a new laptop, new iPhone, free coffee, tea & sodas -- quite a setup. AND it's 3 blocks from the Joann fabric store. Could be trouble, huh, if I spend my new salary on fabric now HEE HEE HEE. Quite possible - I bought fabric yesterday… Continue

Hi, AnnaBanana--it's good to see you back!  I won a second place with the Dresden Plate and the Churn Dash.  My Amish Center Diamond won a third place.  There were some amazingly beautiful quilts--one GFG still stays with me, and one of my guild friends here won a first and several other ribbons for her barn quilt which she started at a Georgia Bonesteel retreat.

I looked through the pictures and saw some of the exchange blocks they were great! I've started looking around for a new fabric to make another quilt out of. I saw one in the pictures that was all blues and thought that was really nice. We'll see what I come up with!

congratulations on your new job Anna! I know I would probably be spending a good portion of my lunch hour and pay check at the fabric store too!

I'm so glad you are still in Georgia--my quilt guild will be coming as a group to Alpharetta (i think) for a Quilt Expo in the fall. There's a quilt show in Hampton this week--just below McDonough and the Scarlet Thread on Jonesboro Rd. :) Glad you are enjoying the job and the commute isn't too bad.

The price of fabric as put a stop on much sewing. When you can buy ready made who wants to sew. Then again after going to a few cheap places today, who wants that mess?
There are a few groups around here, still 30-45 minutes from here that meet at night. One was started at the Library and still is going, only meeting at a church now.
To start your own business will take money and time, plus the risk.
I quilt almost 40 hours a week and can not seem to stop. Last year I purchased HQ16, so I would love to quilt for people.

Hi Anna, saw your first block on the Slackers group - very nice! I struggled with foundation piecing forever before I "got it", so I'm quite impressed!

Hi Anna! Thank you for your nice comments on my blocks! The only thing I do to press my blocks is press as I go along then after the block is complete, I have a small spray bottle with water in it. I mist the block (not soaking, just damp) then press it dry. (Kind of like blocking a needlepoint canvas) This lets you pull it straight a little bit to square the edges. Press on both the front and back of the block, till the block is dry. It also seems to make the seams lay flatter so it doesn't have bumps. For some reason, the mist works even better than a steam iron. Just be careful you don't burn yourself! Hope this helps!

Alright, I need to meet the person with my alter ego. My granddaughter has taken to calling me Anabanana lately, so I decided to use it as a user name in another group I belong to, so I got momentarily confused when I saw it pop up here, thought perhaps I was doing stuff in my sleep LOL.
That is quite a project. Welcome to the site, always great to get new prospective on things.
