Free arm machine quilting

Posted on June 18, 2010 at 9:46am 5 Comments

I find myself doing more and more free-arm quilting and becoming frustrated with managing the bulk of a large quilt and the ability to see where you are at with meander patterns on a regular sewing machine. I've been looking at mid-arm machines and frames. Is anyone using a MAQ Nolting or Bailey for free motion quilting?

Yes, Ann. Sometimes we just snuggle down for the winter when we can't get out and it's a good time to work on our hobbies. We've been cutting wood everyday we can to get ready for winter. We heat with an outdoor wood stove, a kitchen wood cook stove and a fireplace. Fall and winter are my favorite times of the year. Soooooo quiet and peaceful.

We really didn't get much of the effects from the storm this time. We did get a small shower or 2, but not much.
The purses that I have made have very good directions and are really very easy to do. As for the pockets they are all the way around the lining inside the tote. It is sewed to and with the lining. It is subdivided once it is attached to the lining. The #1 pattern in my collection is by Penny Sturgis and is called the "Bow Tucks Tote". She has extrememly well written directions and I just love her bags. I probably have about 6 purse patterns and 5 of them are by Penny. If you want to do one and have never done a bag before I do highly reccommend her patterns.

Glad to hear you are enjoying your birthday!!! I think it's been a crazy year everywhere. I can't complain too much as we skipped the dry hot summer which means forrest fire danger. Just wondering what winter will be like. I think I will stock up. We have 1 1/2 miles to plow to get us out of here.
You should be showing some pretty signs of fall soon and so are we.

the first quilt i did was for the downy quilts for kids they are only about 36x36 not so large but a good starter . the one i am working on now is 60x60 i used a 4 inch center design then worked a design around that which is working just fine but i think if you were to go to larger designs you would have to start and stop as you go along. i look for designs that i know will fit in my working area. i drew the pattern right on my quilt top before i put it on the quilt frame . just wish i had more time to quilt. monica

Ann I start at the top of the quilt and work from side to side then roll it and work the next space until i get to the bottom of the quilt. I watched videos on utube on how to load the quilts on the frame there are several out there they were really helpful for me. maky
