Cora, it wasn't knee surgery.  I have some varicose veins in both m legs and they did a laser treatment yesterday on my right leg.  It's been pretty painless.  Thankfully, my knees are still working.  I know a lot of people that have had their knees done and everyone of them have talked about the pain.  A friend of mine at work had both of them done at the same time in July and with any luck, she'll be back to work next week,  Her Ortho guy couldn't believe that she was able to walk at all.  She did spend a couple of weeks in a rehab hospital at the beginning and even now 4 months later, they still swell.  But, she's determined to come back to work.

Hey Cora - I didn't have a pattern for that quilt - just a photo from Pinterest - I used 2 1/2" strips and I think the purple strips were cut 4 1/2" wide.  It was a fun quilt to make.
