I was reading the sewing machine post and saw you were asking about a Brother. I have a Brother Innovis 1200. I had a Singer that I got in 1971 when I was in high school and it was the top of the line but it was really having feeding problems so I went hunting for a machine. I got the one that does embroidery, but that is a waste. I got the software to be able to make up your own embroidery but that was a waste too, it is really simplistic software and you can't do any of the things they say, it just isn't good enough to do it. The preprogramed embroidery is a joke. Anyway I expect you are looking at a more reasonable machine. The Brother sews smooth. I can do a satin stitch that is wonderful around applique. I have quilted many quilts too, baby quilts and lap quilts, just the straight stitches to quilt. I don't think I can do a queen or king size it just isn't big enough to get in, but I may do a quilt as you go. I have been pleased, my bobbin goes in the top which is easy to get to and I like. I love that it has an auto thread cutter and that is threads the needle. I don't feel it is strong enough to sew many layers of denim, they say it will but I think that isn't true. I am sorry I didn't sew on a Bernina first just to compare to be sure that wasn't what I wanted but like you said they are so expensive. I have had my Brother for 2 years and haven't had any problems. All these stitches and I mainly use the straight and satin. Compared to my old one this one feels like plastic, but they may all I didn't sew on anything else when I was looking. I think because of price. These are more reasonably priced for what they do.
I have a brother in Omaha and an old friend in Papillion NE. I don't think they live close to you though.
I have dial up thru my phone so I don't go online until after 9 pm. Usually the chat line doesn't have too many folks on late at night. Let me know if you want to chat up some time. Check my profile for more info on me!
