About Me
I started quilting in the spring of 2003....I was out of work and between jobs...A friend made a quilt for my daughter that was pieced by hand and I really likedit. So I decided that I would give it a try. So, I pieced my first quilt by hand and tied it. (I didnt have a machine at the time) and I have been hooked since. I don't have a certain style of quilting, I just like to create quilts that are beautiful to me and yet be functional. My quilts are made to be used, not just looked at. I have 2 kids.

What kind of backing should I use?

Posted on February 21, 2015 at 10:58am 11 Comments

Hey Yawl,

I just finished a flannel quilt and I am confused about what type of backing to use.  Should I use a flannel backing or a regular cotton backing.  Help!

Free motion quilting with the feed dogs up?

Posted on February 4, 2014 at 9:23pm 10 Comments

I read a wonderful article by Leah Day who quilts with her feed dogs up.  This is interesting to me because I have so much trouble with free motion and having my feed dogs down.  I am going to try this and report my progress back to you'll.  Here is the link for her article http://www.leahday.com/art-dropfeeddogs/

If you free motion with your feed dogs up, please let me know if you like it better than with the feed dogs…

Do you need batting for a blue jean quilt?

Posted on June 7, 2013 at 6:23pm 9 Comments

Hey Yawl,

I am piecing a blue jean quilt. The jean fabric is pretty heavy and I have decided to use flannel to back it.  Do I need batting or will it be too heavy? I've read a lot of things about this on the internet, but I need advice from my expert neighbors.  What should I do?

Thanks,

QuiltMan.

Quilts for Oklahoma tornado victims

Posted on May 25, 2013 at 8:17pm 4 Comments

Hey Yawl,

I know that I am late on this issue, but is anyone sending quilts to the displaced families in Oklahoma? If so, I want to help.  Does anyone have an address that I can send them to and a contact person?

Thanks,

QuiltMan

Yes, men do quilt!

I really wish that I had the time to create a quilt to enter into this contest, but unfortunately I do not.  There are male quilters on this blog, so go ahead and show your stuff.  Make me proud. To the women, you are welcomed to cheer.  :-)

For the military quilts, we typically make them in patriotic colors and/or prints because we were told that was what is preferred (by the recipients).  For quilts in other colors, those get donated to the Quilts for Kids organizations.  Many of our kids quilts are donated to kids with cancer in the area and sometimes, quilts have been shipped to other areas when a need was expressed by other quilt group organizers.  I will gladly send you information about the Mother Seton Parish Quilting Angels of Germantown, MD.

Hi Quilt Man,

Thanks for the compliments on my patriotic quilts.  I work with a Quilts of Valor group in Germantown, Maryland.  The quilts get donated to VA hospitals, returning and wounded vets, and even get sent to a camp in Afghanistan.  I love piecing and making the tops, and my very old sewing machine does one thing well - sew straight lines.  We have some women in the group with fancy quilting machines and longarm machines so the actual quilting in done by them.  We work in a very large parish hall of a church.  The group has been in operation for going on six years (and Quilts for Kids are also made, going to various pediatric cancer units).  I joined in August of 2010.  We have people donating fabric, blocks and even unfinished quilts.  We don't turn anything away!  If you would ever like to donate one of your fabulous quilts (or even blocks for that matter), I would be more than happy to send you information about the group (including the website). I am very passionate about supporting our troops!

P.S. Deborah Rogers, is the owner and founder of Victoria's Quilts..and is also on Pinterest..no money involved! You use your own fabric..she sends you a label for your quilt..and you send it to her then they send them out! Easy!

Quilt man, Hi! I love your quilts, so colorful! Yah, to you men, you do great work! I think I will also make some quilts for Victoria's Quilts..the head of the Victoria Quilt is a friend on my Facebook ..Her headquarters is in LA...about 1hour from me..I like the freedom of her group..no dead lines to meet! ..where the other groups do. I don't want to commit to a dead line..because I have to care for my husband, who has Alzheimer's..and he always wants me near him..I think I will have to move my sewing machine downstairs to make him feel not so alone! My daughter gave me a lot of her material to sew for kids..so I am excited to get started big time...Having a quilting bug is worse than eating potato chips!

I love your work Quilt Man!!  I can tell that you are really hooked on quilting/sewing.  I have been bitten by the quilt bug since 2008.  I love it too!!

Keep on quilting!!!

Hi Quilt Man.  It has been quite a while since I have been on this site.  I have been busy stitching my way through time.  I added more pics.

I have been looking at your work.  It is wonderful work.
