While I'd rather be quilting today - I'm actually cooking. Having a dinner tonight for about 18-20 folks. Ham, pork chops, collard greens, beans, carrot cake and more - yum, yum!! My youngest daughter, Shannon, 19, is leaving for Air Force Basic Training on Monday. She is following in the footsteps of her dad and her oldest sister, Breana, 28. Both served almost ten years in the Air Force. I am proud that my family serves, but I know I will miss her terribly. She is so much fun to be around (mos…

It's fantastic living here in CA, BUT...the earthquakes are unsettling when they happen. Luckily we don't have many that we really feel too often. The wildfires scare me to death. We lost our home in the 2003 Cedar Fire and I go on high alert when I hear of an advisory. I even get mad at the reporters because they soup it up so much and I'm afraid that it will just give some idiot out there the idea to go start something. When the winds blow and it's hot, I'm a nervous wreck! So yes, you do pick and choose what you are able to put up with. We all must sacrifice something for our blessings. We were able to rebuild and have a lovely home again! I have a soft spot in my heart now for any victims of disaster. I was just thankful that we had so much support and so many blessings along the way. Our whole community, and those communities around us were nearly 100% affected. Many weren't as fortunate, but out of 400+ homes lost just in our immediate neighborhood, most have rebuilt and we're all the stronger because of it.
Today, I am enjoying my big day! I have a patriotic quilt that I'll be binding. It's for a friend's daughter who arrived back from Iraq. She's in town and a few of us made blocks and then had our co-workers sign the back and we'll present it to her this week. I'll try to post pics!
I got to know another nice lady from Texas through this site and we've become close friends so there must be something very special about Texans. Or is it quilters in general? : )

My youngest daughter has a vague interest in sewing/quilting although the machine quilting a year ago has been her most recent attempt! About 3 years ago she cutout fabric letters and zig-zagged a tee shirt for my birthday with the sentence "I'm a Jukebox Hero" across the front. She may get around to dabbling in it but I don't see anytime soon - her academic interests override anything else!
Welcome to San Antonio, have you melted yet? There are a couple of active quilt guilds here, the Alamo Heritage Quilt Guild and the Greater San Antonio Quilt Guild. There are also a few smaller ones that are organized at various churches. If you attend church, you might inquire there, or do a search on Google for Greater San Antonio Quilt Guild or Alamo Heritage Quilt Guild. I think the Alamo guild has made their website only accessible to their members though. They usually meet the first Thursday of the month at a church off Wetmore over near the airport. I usually host a small quilting/crafty group once a month, if you are interested, let me know and I'll add you to the e-mail group for that one. Welcome again!

I hope you find some great ideas and support in our group. Welcome!
