Back to school

Summer break has gone too quickly! I'm excited to be back with the kids in school, but really mourning the loss of concentrated quilting time, not to say QWU time! I have a couple of UFO's that i'll be finishing for fundraisers, and a guild round robin to keep me sane! How long until Thanksgiving? Do you think the family will notice if I set the table with FQ's and 2 1/2" strips???

Whirlwind trip....

I had the opportunity to accompany DH on a business trip to Fairbanks, Alaska. What a neat place! But, the best part....the quilt shops in log cabins! I felt really silly in Material Girls oogling the cool "Alaska" quilts, but I did it anyway. It was the experience of what do I look at next, what do I want, oh my! I finally settled on a particular local designer pattern and polar bear fabric. Will I try to go back? Absolutely! The people were welcoming and warm; the scenery amazing. But then, qu… Continue

Christmas in July

I've been working on a Christmas quilt top for our local shop's "Christmas in July" sale. Granted, I'm a little behind the power curve, but that is what I get when I make it up as I go. I used a charm pack, several yards of fabric and a really good seam ripper. The fabric is all Moda's "Kansas Troubles" fabric, so the colors are rich and warm. The pattern is a little irregular (intentional) so it gives a jolt to the more tranditional fabric. (I've been told by the shop owner that I'm good at tha… Continue

Back at the machine....sort of.

Oklahoma was great! I absolutely loved the Sooner Quilt shop in Guthrie. If you get a chance...it's worth the trip. Family good, elderly cousins great! Came home and found that my local shop was having a Sew-in, which was just what I needed. Bought fabric, made Kaleidescope table runner and it is now part of the display for Christmas fabric. Who would have thought? I'll post pictures when I see the top again! I'm debating, do I continue to piece or do I start quilting what I have? Big dilema....… Continue

On vacation

Off to vacation a week in Oklahoma, catching up with family and friends. I am thrilled to see everyone, but really am not excited about no machine or fabric. I guess the local quilt shops may have to be on my itinerary! The most positive thing I can think of is that my eyes will be rested to fall head first into fabric when I get home. Have a great week!

Mystery quilts...

Found a really cool mystery on line. I, however, have broken every rule since the beginning. The directions were to use 1/2 yard cuts. I, however, want to use my FQ stash. I was supposed to choose 12 prints; I now have 24 (or so!). I did cut the strips as directed and I will have the correct number of blocks; that is after I added more fabric. Oh well, I am enjoying the sewing. I think that I've discovereed it is easier to piece on vacation and to quilt during the school year. it's my excuse and… Continue

Concentrated quilting time coming!

Tomorrow is 1/2 day for students and we begin summer break! It also begins my concentrated piecing/quilting time. I am so excited. this week (I operate very efficiently under stress!) I have cut and almost finished piecing a BQ2 quilt top. It is really easy and a great beginner's quilt....or one for someone who just has to do something! The colors are not quilte mine, but i think I like it. Will post pictures when finsihed piecing. Quilting could be a ways off! I am anxiously looking to begin ne… Continue

How time flies!!!

The weeks have flown! My poor machines look at me longinly when I run past! Maybe touching the fabric is in my future over summer break:-) #3 grandson, Garrett Paul weighed in at 8 lbs this past Wednesday. Family doing well; big brother (age 5) couldn't wait to take his "bro" home!

Planning a quilt....

Just sent home my guild companion in crime. We had the "kick off the raffle quilt" meeting with our guild VP and Pres. The design includes Rail Fence and nine patch blocks, rotating around a celtic applique. My bud and I verbally designed it while riding home from a quilt show in February. The best part is, the VP/PRes liked it! So, the next step is to purchase the fabrics....What a tough one! Gonna have to go fabric shopping. Hey, somebody's gonna have to do it! We also have the scheduling of t… Continue

Am new...

Am new to this group and would like to introduce myself. My name is Jeannie and I live in eastern North Carolina. I teach elementary/middle school and love weekends when I can quilt. DH works on the road so I spend lots of time at home. I love fabric and playing with it. Right now I'm trying to find my way around, but really like what I see! Hoping to get to know some of you soon!

Hi Jeannie: Thanks for the news about your school and class. Hope studies are going well this week. My DH and I just returned from a 5-day trip to northern CA visiting step-daughter and family, including 2 young grandchildren. Lots of laughter. Teacher meetings start tomorrow. Still have a few hours left of quilting before reality sets in. Happy quilting!

Gosh I miss this place! I seriously didn't realize how much I had come to depend upon your comments until I went back to work and can't check in so often! I'm quiet...so you won't hear from me often. But, I'm there! This is an awesome community!

I know it will definitely be a change for the better.
I hope we can get there eventually.
Ohio is associated with nothing but bad memories.
Thank you for your comment.

Hi Jeannie:
Welcome back to school. I teach 3rd grade in Los Angeles, and will be returning next week to set up my classroom. Students return on Sept. 9. We are a predominately Spanish speaking, Title 1 school which can be challenging for me at times because I don't speak Spanish. My students and I communicate fine, but I need translators for parent conferences which can be frustrating for all.
Glad to hear you got lots of quilting squeezed into your vacation. When the academic year starts I seem to only have time for piecing. In June I had 14 quilts to sandwich and quilt. Still working on them.
Just wanted to let you know that I lived in Durham, NC for 6 years as a child (ages 9-15) and have wonderful memories. Our house was nestled in a pine forest with lots of birds. Great place to raise a family (at least that's my memory).
Hope to hear about your students and school. Take care and happy quilting.

I looked at your quilts and they are beautiful. You'll have to post the one with the material you bought in AK. That'll be an awesome quilt. Have fun quilting.

Hello Jeannie
Thank you for the birthday greeting. My birthday was filled with things I love and I spent it with a dear friend. I have had a busy couple months and have not been on site, so just got the greeting today. I am waiting for a friend from California to come over for lunch. Thank you again

Thank you so much. It's really easy to spend money on fabric, even when you don't need it!

Hi Jeannie - the quilt you saw is called "Quilters Puzzle", it is a "equiltpattern" by Liz Schwartz - web is www.equiltpatterns.com. It was a lot of fun to do - I hope you can find the pattern. I did mine in all batiks and black but really bright colors would have been fun too. Good Luck and happy quilting - Kate O

Well, I have not really taken enough time to get going on the longarm. I did find that the tension was too tight, so I have been working with it a bit to get it the way I want it. I hope this week to make more progress.

Thanks for the email. Hope you are doing well!
