Never heard of that

OK, good news and bad news. First the good. While at the MIL's we visited the quilt shop and they had this great pattern for pumpkins made from a fat quarter and toilet paper. I had Jack pick out his fabric and he and grandma made this:

And the bad news isn't too bad. Jack has been sick lately, three tim… Continue

Promised Pictures

Firstly, please pardon the filthy carpet. We are in the middle of fall cleaning and need to rent a carpet shampooer.

The two quilts I can claim part in, my first 2, were a kit and a set of fat quarters I pieced. My mother-in-law finished them up. Here they are, both were made for Jack.

Wow, long time, no update

I have been crafting, slowly but surely. With a 3 year old and a 3 month old it has been a bit, well, slow going. The knitting has suffered the most, which is good news for the quilting!

I have worked hard to finish the quilt top for Lily's quilt made from old receiving blankets, and I got it done just in time for our 4 day trip to the mother-in-law's house. There she was able to give me some pretty lilac flannel for the back and teach me how to hand quilt. Let me just say I don't ever forsee w… Continue

GFG off to a good start

My Mom sent me some money for my birthday just days after I set my mind to making a Grandmother's Flower Garden, just after I chose the Country Essentials Breeze collection for the flowers. I picked out the 3/4" hexigons and anxiously awaited my package. It got here in record time and I was able to cut the fat quarters into 2" strips and cut some white fabric into strips. One strip of each I cut into 2" squares. Now I was ready to go.

Day 1 of the actual piecing I managed 3 flowers. I found out that the whipstitch showed through too much for my liking. If I put the pieces right sides together I can do a decent ladder stitch that remains invisible.

But for some reason my creative mojo is lacking in the verbal department tonight. This is not an exciting or entertaining post, just a means to show off the first batch of pics.

The strips rolled up:

The first set of squares:

First 3 flowers:

I am somewhat randomly choosing color combos, one for the middle and one for the petals. I say somewhat because I will try to keep one dark, one light and try to keep colors different. The pathways will be white. Stay tuned for part 2 of the sure-to-be never ending GFG!

Jennifer, I admire your patience at attempting a GFG! I love the pattern, but have not the patience for piecing it. My goal is to find a vintage GFG or dresden plate quilt top in an antique store, at a garage sale, or somewhere that I can quilt for myself. I love the quilting a whole lot more than the piecing.
Anyway, your flower sets look perfect. Have fun with it, and I can't wait to see it when it's done! I wish you lots of piecing time, but I know that you have your hands full with now 2 little ones! Congratulations.

Thanks for the idea of cutting into 2" squares. It would surely make it easier I am sure. Thanks for the tip.

I'm impressed with your choosing to do the Grandmother's Flower Garden pattern! It will be a wonderful quilt to have. I'm afaid that it would take me forever to finish it.

Happy Birthday! Enjoy your self today.

Is Coralville near Mason City IA? My daughter and family live in between Hampton (kids went to school) and Iowa Falls (where husband works). It's a pretty area to live in!
