Laments of a Working Mother

I more than like quilting, it is a necessary part of my sanity. Being able to go to my sewing room and shut the door for an hour or so a couple of times during the week provides me with the mental fortitude I need to get through a work week. So how is it that the week gets sucked away into everything else? For example:

Monday - Deal with school parent/tearcher association treasurer stuff and pay own bills (well it has to get done at some point, I do need electricity to sew.)

Tuesday - Rush out… Continue

Fall Break

It was Fall Break for DD this week. So we decided to take a trip north to Missouri. DH and DD had decided that bike riding on the Katy Trail was going to be the ideal activity for them. Me, I was hoping to hit a couple of quilt shops enroute. Well at least one of the three got what they wanted. It's been cold (below 50 F) and rainy all week. So no riding. DD has contented herself with the hotel pool. DH decided to drown his sorrows in the bottle (Not really, he made do with a few forays to some… Continue

What Next?

I'm acutally staying home from work today, DD woke me at 2:30 AM with abdominal pain. An hour later, we headed to the ER. They didn't find anything so we headed home at about 6:30 AM. I suspect she hurt herself last night when she crashed on her bike and it was probably muscle spasms, which aren't fun, but thankfully aren't typically life threatening. She's resting comfortably now, so I could sew, but I'm just too fuzzy brained from the lack of sleep.

I finished up DH's quilt and now can't deci… Continue

Is Monday Over Yet?

Monday's are rarely my favorite day of the week. Not that good things don't happen on Monday (sometimes). The quiliting books ordered from Connecting Threads came today (the ones that I was able to order on sale). Only problem is that I wanted to look at my new books and not finish my DH's quilt which has to be at the long arm quilter's by Wednesday if I want it done before Christmas. So I spent a few minutes thumbing through the new books, then took myself upstairs to finish the borders on DH's… Continue

Challenge to Myself

It's 63 F and foggy in my part of Oklahoma this morning. It's been a weird late summer, usually we have 100 degree heat in August. But this summer, highs have been in the upper 80's and low 90's. Not that I'm complaining, it's just that with the temperature so moderate, I can't make excuses to spend time in my sewing room because it's simply too hot to do anything else.

I started a new quilt last weekend. It was supposed to be done in a class, but there weren't enough people signed up at the sh… Continue

About Me
I've been married for 17 years and have one daughter. I work full time as a research chemist.

I've always enjoyed sewing, starting with Barbie clothes in grade school. My grandmother and mother taught me to sew and embroidrey. I made my first quilt about 20 years ago when I was in college, but due to class loads, getting a job, getting married, having my daughter, didn't make another until about 9 years ago. I love machine peicing best. I use the computer to design my quilts.

Glad to hear DH made it home safely. I believe he's tired! Sounds like my DH, he can stay up like that without a problem. Not me... I need sleep every night.
Got most of what I wanted to get done for Christmas sewing. I might do a couple of other things, but won't pressure myself. Good news is, I for sure have three quilts coming in any day now! At the moment, I am working on a baby quilt for a family friend's new baby. I am using all scraps, including batting and backing! Simple design, just strips.

Achy feeling left me Monday evening, never got worse, so I don't know what that was about, but felt great yesterday.
I'm sure you will be very happy to have DH home and to have time together next week. A good time to have off together, BEFORE all the big holiday rush and madness starts instead of during.
It cooled down here a lot, too. It's still above normal, but with the winds coming out of the east/northeast, and pretty strong, it hasn't felt very warm.
Hope you get an opportunity to get some sewing in soon, but it sounds like it will be a while for you!
Enjoy your time with your DH when he gets home!

Didn't get done what I planned to this weekend. Unexpected visitors. I did work on some Christmas stuff yesterday. I want to more today, but last night I started feeling sick. I feel better this morning, but achy and weak.
I had thought about patterns, and I still might, just don't know yet. Regardless, it will still be a challenge for me, I've never done anything like this. I, too, want quilting to be my career, one way or another. I don't plan on quilting for others forever. Designing and teaching seem to be the biggest ways a person gets into the quilting community (if they want to make money). I don't know how far into it I want to go, but definitely something.
How was your trip home? Did you avoid the bad weahter?
My family all lives less than 30 minutes from me, but we don't see each other as often as you would think. One of my sisters home schools and works, so her time is very limited to do much of anything. The other sister used to work in a factory for 30 yearss and for a long time was putting in 50-60 hour weeks. The factory closed and she went to a local tech school for a while, but my life got so insanely busy for several years, my social life took a real nosedive. I was helping out with our business, took care of my sick mother a lot, four kids and then my husband's parents dying. I'm first at that point again where I can even consider being a social being again!

One of the books I want to do is small projects. The other one, I'm not totally sure. I have never attempted to do anything like this before, so it shall be interesting. I'm excited for this lady to publish her book. She made all of hers of scraps, but I can't divulge any other details.
Yes, you would think a lot of people would be rushing to get Christmas stuff done, but so far I haven't heard anything. Last year at this time it was kind of quiet for me.
Sounds like you have a fun weekend planned. Do your families live nearby? Mine do, but my DH's parents both died two years ago, they lived across the field from us. We enjoyed that.
Is this the longest your DH has been gone? I'll bet you're excited to see him, and I'm sure he really misses the both of you!
Looks like I will be spending some time this weekend working on some small Christmas gifts for some of my girls.

We have never moved before, so this is new for us. I'm okay with it all, glad we went through everything now, then when it's time to go, no dealing with other junk later on.
Had my guild meeting last night and I was so touched. This lady I do a lot of quilt work for had me quilt this quilt for her a couple of months ago. She was going to do scallops on the outer edge, took it home and didn't like doing it, asked me to do it (for a fee of course) and I did. She brought it along for show and tell last night and 'bragged' on me a bit, which was so nice! I had a few ladies come up to me later to compliment me on my work. I do appreciate this kind of 'advertising' so much, as it helps my business a lot. It has been too quiet the last two weeks, but I'm hoping that, and my ad in our guild newsletter, will bring more work to me. I have a few ladies from out of state that I do work for, the one that sends me the most work is from IL and most of the stuff she has sent me so far is for a quilt book she is writing, so yes, I will be published when the book is done. I plan on writing my own quilt book(s), have been working on the outlines, not sure when I will sit down and really attack them though. I am hoping over the winter.
Which reminds me. A good friend of mine in CA is a longarmer and she has quilted several quilts for Eleanor Burns' books. She was contacted this week about a job for Eleanor Burns! She is taking it and cutting back drastically on her machine quilting for others. Just had to 'brag on her ' a bit, I'm so excited and happy for her!

I wanted to get at those windows for the longest time. Everytime I thought of it recently, it was too cold to take them apart to clean. Finally, things were quiet here and the weather warmed up, I figured I better jump at that chance. Not that cleaning windows excites me, I would prefer to pay somebody else to do it in the future, but at least it's done. Yes, we put those plastic shrink films over our windows about this time of year before it gets too cold, it helps cut down on heating costs and we need new windows.
Our weather has been a complete switch this year as well! October was colder than November has been so far, it's really odd, as a matter of fact, this month we've had some very unusually warm days since Saturday. I'm not complaining, that's for sure! Many of our months this year were switched around, it was the oddest thing!
I'm almost done with all of the cleaning I want to do, then it's time to buy the plastic containers and pack stuff away and move them into the garage, then all I can do at that point is just keep the house clean.
Funny, I love to cook and bake, I really miss having the family around to do it for. I used to hate cleaning, but did it anyway. Now I rather enjoy it, but I admit, it's much easier when people aren't messing it up all the time. Sort of like Phyllis Diller used to say; cleaning the house when you have kids is like shoveling while it's snowing!' How true! I have also found in recent years, I clean when I'm upset. I never used to do that, but now when something is bothering me, I start attacking cabinets and drawers and other stuff. I suppose it's better than other things! ;-)
Good job on getting some time to yourself, getting some cleaning done and getting sewing done! That must've felt good. I completed a quilt yesterday, one I've been quilting on here and there and had to stop for a while because I had a bunch of quilt jobs and was teaching a class. I got the binding on last night and labeled it, now I need to wash it and photograph it and post it. I have to wash it because I used this cotton batting that wasn't needlepunched and there is lint all over the top (it's got a lot of dark colors on it) of it now! I'm still debating whether or not to sell it. I had the top for sale on my site, decided to finish it, probably should sell it now, we really could use the money. But it's tight for a lot of people all over the country, so not sure what to think about that one!

We start in Denison, TX and go to Heber, CA most of the time. Once in a while we have a stop in Nogales, AZ or San Diego, CA then the rest of the load or empty trailer goes to Heber. So from Denison we go to Gainesville then south on 35 to Ft Worth and then west on I-20 to I-10 to I-8. Same route back. We stay on I-20 to Atlanta then take the loop to I-85 N to Charlotte. Same route back to Dallas then back to Denison to do it all over again. This load I picked up in Heber today is empty flomats going back to Denison.

Good to hear from you! I've really been enjoying your replies!
Yes, your DH does sound a lot like my guy! Russ also used to do automotive body repair work years ago, that is how he got into manufacturing paint products and selling them instead. He also always fixes our vehicles and anything around the house, but is trying to get away from that, he has other things he'd rather do.
Today I spent the entire day cleaning. We had unusually warm weather today, so I took advantage of it and cleaned windows. I hate that job, but it has to be done, especially before we put plastic on all of the windows for the winter (it can get pretty cold here in WI and we need new windows as well). I haven't cleaned this deeply in a while, and I managed to move some of our stuff out to the garage for when we sell and move. It's things we don't really need right now, or seasonal stuff. Then I did a few mending projects and tomorrow I will finish the last of the cleaning and do some baking and sewing. It just felt so good to finally get this stuff done, and for once my phone did not ring and I had nowhere to go or anything else urgent that needed to be done.
Hope you got a chance to do some sewing after all! what did you do today?

Yeah, log book I do as I go and trip envelopes at the end of each trip so I can scan them and get paid. It's amazing how fast the truck can get cluttered...LOL. I don't bother washing the outside too often, usually when I go home it goes through the wash bay at the yard. I sweep and dust when it needs it..usually after I leave CA as it is so dry and dusty there. They water the drop yard to help keep the dust down. Wash the windows, check the oil and stuff when I fuel. It's not too bad if I keep up with it as I go.
