getting into the business

Posted on February 20, 2009 at 10:05am 1 Comment

My question is If a person would like to get into the business of quilting. Where would you start?
I don't mean quilting tops but the actual customer service and office work.
I was recently laid off and would like to work in the area that is my passion. My history is customer service and data entry for a promotional products distributor.
Any suggestion are welcome.

I may be looking for a full-time supplemental job. My DH is in the process as we speak of exploring my options in retirement. My school district is trying to clean out all the old expensive teachers and lowering their budget shortfalls. But I'm senior in my dept and I don't have to go. Their answer is to give me an assignment that is so uncomfortable that I want to leave. Soooo, since the whole matter is so extremely draining emotionally and mentally, DH is taking over and crunching the numbers. One year from now it wouldn't be as hard...I could get SS then. There is still the issue of medical insurance....oh, decisions, decisions. Wake me when it's over.
OR if my sibs could agree on how to proceed with selling my mom's share of a farm, we would all be better off. Except baby brother who is still too far from retirement to understand what his 4 older sisters are facing. Oh, boy, I'm rambling. You could probably care less; you have your own fish to fry.
Thanks for putting up with me.

Hi Peggy, I'm another Minnesotan in a situation similar to yours. I would like to retire from teaching and do something else. I'm not particularly looking to "retire", even though I'm there age-wise. I'm just burned out in my career, if you know what I mean. I want to be around sewing, quilting, etc. As a teacher, I think I have plenty of experiences; just don't know how to market myself or where to begin. Enough about me......best of luck to you and keep us posted on your progress. Lana
