About Me
I am a self taught artist, gathering techniques through observation and practice. I also love drawing and watercolour painting. I display my work regionally. I live with my family, surrounded by projects - never a dull moment!
I love the natural landscape, and flowers in particular. From representational work to expressive form I seek to capture an image that honours the beauty of nature. I spent many years hand making quilts, honouring the traditions of our foremothers. Now I am exploring the boundaries of the quilting arts; adding textural, sculptural, hand-dyed, hand-painted, and embellished elements.

Grandma's Kitchen

Posted on March 6, 2009 at 10:06am 4 Comments

This piece was done in response to a challenge by my journal group. The Challenge was "Grandma's Kitchen". The design isn't great- the flowers 'float' around in the centre. I am thinking of a way to save the piece by adding some element (stems, vase?) onto the… Continue

This sounds like fun! Are there any other art quilters out there? I love the traditional quilting too. Right now with our family's committment towards building our new workshop/studio there is not a lot of time for quilting large projects. (ie, we are the builders) My solution is to do small projects (12x12") that can be completed and still leave me free to follow my muse when the next idea comes…

Hi Terra, I do a bit of hand dyeing but have developed quite a stash of hand dyes that I have picked up on eBay, at shows and kind of whenever I have found them so tend more to use those rather than dye my own (will do more of my own dyeing when we finally settle full time on the acreage and I can do a lot of the messy work outdoors or in the greenhouse). You hand painted works are lovely...the details just make the work look alive. But you live where inspiration is right outside your window 12 months of the year!!! How lucky you are. Think maybe this summer I might make my trek to Uclulet/Tofino/ Long Beach for spiritual renewal...have done that journey every five or ten years since 1967 and it is time. No where on earth do I feel more at peace than on that long stretch of sand with all the hidden coves. Have you gone there??

Terra, Thank you for the kind comments. The ladies were designed from a person From Spring, Tx. I "relocated" them onto scenes. I did try to get more at one time and she no longer answers the phone number on the pattern and I can't find her anywhere else. I am a very privilaged quilter to live here in Houston.

Dear Terra, I just love all your quilts. They are so creative and colorful and plain fantastic. I'm from the far far south, Houston to be exact. Have you ever come to the Quilt Festival here? Love to see more of your work.

Hi back Terra, Yes, I'm from Alberta now but lived in Haney and Victoria for the first 31 years and in Stewart before we moved here. Used to go to Quadra Island occasionally way back in the 60's and early 70's...it was still very undeveloped but was great for camping, hiking and fun! You group sounds fun and challenging. Yes, please post some more pictures. Love the one you have posted.
Happy creative quilting, Susan
