Whooping Cranes

We went down to Rockport (Tx) yesterday to see a friend--bonus--the Whooping Cranes had left the Aransas Refuge seeking crabs in the marshy beaches of Rockport!!--we saw almost a dozen of these magnificent birds along with the usual Egrets, Gray Herons--and a flamingo colored bird --something hornbill. The wildflowers covered fields with purple, pink, white and yellow, the yucca had magnificant stalks of flowers. The sky was an intense blue after the morning fog and the water was a lovely reflec… Continue

We're having a blizzard!!

Yes, here in the land of palm trees and yards full of roses for Christmas--the grass is white and DS just brought in the first snowball I've seen since we moved here!! It's the perfect day to sit stiching by the open fire with a warm drink at hand!! A blizzard in Houston makes one quite giddy!!

Quilt Retreat

We just had a fantastic retreat at Red Barn in Coldspring, Texas. Am thoroughly inspired by what we saw/did and the great show at Huntsville--the Airing of the Quilts was truely excellent. Yes, the retreat and the show are really close together and the timing is perfect. The weather also cooperated, in a rainy week those ladies are really gutsy for hanging an outside show--they were the delicious sandwich between t-storms!! If anyone is interested, I can post pictures?… Continue

Thanks for your comment on my harlequin quilt. I love batiks so that one caught my eye. I looked through your quilts and they are beautiful, especially the applique ones. I've just started an applique project and am really enjoying it.

Will keep you both in prayer.

DD and I had a good visit - seems like we mainly did laundry, though. She is back in school and we hope to see her again Easter weekend. Mom has a birthday today. She is 75. A couple of granddaughters were visiting her "helping" her bake an Angel Food cake. She wondered if she should get out some frozen strawberries. I told her that if Dad had anything to say about it, she should! :0)

I've been working a little bit on the quilt in my frame. I have so many projects lined up that I'd like to get started on. I had computer issues yesterday, so spent most of the afternoon working on that. Things seem to be resolved today.

I'd better get back to work. Will be lifting you up. Keep me posted.

Thanks Cellogirl, your an angel. I'm going to look for the pencil when I quilt shop hop with my sister next week. I'm leaving this weekend to visit her (with my girls), DH has to work but we're off on a little holiday. I will find it and test it for us both to know how it works.
I can't believe you went from coast to coast - what a trip! I will be about an hour from the ocean at my sister's place (near Vancouver). 3 years ago we went to PEI and Nova Scotia, saw the places you've mentioned (of course) and loved it. The feeling there is like stepping back in time. Everyone kept their yards neat, hanging their laundry, keeping a garden - I was in heaven! We travelled around both provinces as much as we could. It was great.
Thanks again for your help. I'll let you know how it works when I get back home.

Hi cellogirl - I wasn't sure! The product with the white refill says washable, but the dark refill didn't say and believe it or not, no one has ever asked, nor had I ever tested it. So I called fons and porter (straight from the horses mouth!) and they confirmed that both white and lead color refills are washable.

But my personal policy is to never trust that anything washes out without testing it first on the specific fabric you plan to use. Since all fabrics have various chemicals, I always double check before trusting!

Thank you so much for your help. I love having you to chat with about quilting.
I've never heard of removable lead pencil. Can you give me the brand? Until I heard about the freezer paper on top, I'd only just turned the edge on my drawn line. I did have trouble with smooth curves, as you can see on my Wish Upon a Star quilt. I'll try trimming as you suggested.
Unfortunately for British Columbia, forest management isn't the problem. For several year the pine beetle have been consuming our forests and the only way to kill them is very cold winter for several weeks. We've had year after year of mild temperatures. The dead forests in our province are huge 100 mile X 100 mile areas. Now the beetle has flown over the Rocky Mountains into Alberta and is devestating their forests. No way to stop it.
I'm taking this applique project to my sisters - leaving Sunday to Wed. and want to do some hand work. I usually have one applique on the go at all times. I find it peaceful.
Have a great weekend. Dianne

Thanks for getting back to me. I will try it again.
How cool to see whooping cranes! I'm loving spring because I can hear the birds in the morning again. It's wet this AM, but I'm glad to see the rain. We're only at 60% of our snow pack and they are already talking drought and water restrictions. Last summer I watched two forest fires from my deck. It was very scray. 6 years ago a forest fire consummed a nearby mountain and came into town. Almost 300 homes burned before they stopped it. Thank God no one was hurt - most of the town was evacuated. It's going to be another summer like that one. I live on the outskirts of town and have miles of pine beetle killed pine trees between me and the city. It's dead, dry, standing and has to burn. Sorry to go off topic, I'm worried.
Back to quilting - I'm starting a small applique project - here's the link https://www.frommyhearttoyourhands.com/Qstore/Qstore.cgi?CMD=011&PROD=1224491501
Which way do you applique? I like needle turn with a traced line, but an instructor recently suggested using freezer papaer on top. What do you think would be suitable for this size of pattern?
Have a great day!

Hi Cellogirl,
Help again! I'm trying to make a card trick block and have to match all these triangle points...... The problem is both pieces have the seams pressed to the dark, so when I'm lining up the points there is so much bulk that one ends up pushing the other aside and it won't match. Some of the blocks are a triangle square and half square joined to make a square. Does that make sense?? If not - look at my page - blue and yellow quilt with the shaded sawtooth border. It's squares like those I'm trying to join.
Anyway.... I'm hoping you have a tip for how to get the points to match. Do you ignore the pressed seam and flip it over, or start at the other end and not the point????
Thanks so much for your help. I hope you don't mind another question.

Hope you've had a good weekend. Todd was still feeding and doing chores this morning when the kids & I headed in to Sunday school. He'd told me he may not make it in to church because he was missing a heifer and was afraid she was calving and another heifer was just starting to calve. We don't normally calve this time of year, but a neighbor's bull happened to get in with the heifers and bred about 5 or so of them, much to Todd's disgust. (We normally calve May 15th - June 15th.) The heifer had just calved when we got home from church, but then there were other problems that needed dealt with. Todd rode all through the pasture before he finally found the missing heifer and it hadn't ended well for her or the calf. She'd died trying to calve. He absolutely hates that. It hasn't been the best day for Todd at all.

DS saddled up the colt he's been working with and used her to sort the heifers. She either became confused or just plain fed up with him, because she bogged her head and went to pitchin' with him. Todd said Tell rode her out and she was just fine after her little fit. :0)

Guess that's the update from here.

Hello! I hope you've had a good week. Hopefully you were able to do some quilting. We had some really good news today. My nephew had his brain scan today in Denver. It has been 6 years since his last brain tumor surgery. He is 24 and engaged to be married this summer. The scan was clear and they told him he wouldn't need to return for 2 years. LOTS of praises going up for that. I know it wears on them each time he goes back for a checkup.

Shoni comes home tomorrow. We're looking forward to that. I've been trying to catch up on laundry and dictation today. Doing well on the laundry, not as good on the dictation. :)

Happy quilting!
