A Quilt Story

Posted on May 8, 2018 at 10:03am 8 Comments

This DWR quilt that I posted a picture of was made by my sister's 1st husband's grandmother sometime in the 1930's. It is handpieced. She carried the quilt top all over the different places she has lived, even after divorce. When I started quilting, she asked me to quilt it for her to give to her oldest son.  It felt like an honor, but also was a bit scarrey. Sunday evening I…

Long arm needles

Posted on October 15, 2014 at 11:33am 4 Comments

I am the proud new owner of a long  arm machine.  When I bought the machine, they sold me needles, size 18.  First 2 quilts turned out fine, using Warm & Natural batting, but the one I am working on now has a red backing & I'm using Hobbs batting & it is coming through on the back!  Not heavily, but very noticeable on the red backing.  My question is, why do I have to use such a big needle?

hello Enid - No I haven't done the binding on my DWR yet.  I did, however, get the quilt top of the Irish Chain all sewn - now I have to decide how I'm going to quilt it. I hope you are doing well. What are you sewing these days? we've been busy with family grad parties, anniversary party, confirmations, etc. now that that is all done with, I hope to concentrate on some sewing again. my niece and family just left this morning from a 2 day visit - they live in Maryland. Have a great weekend? Becky

So good of you to write back,Enid :) My quilt is king size so I guess if I buy about 2 yards of fabric for the binding, that should be plenty. I haven't measured it yet and I can do that and allow extra for in between the scallops. I think I have a video by Eleanor Burns that shows how to sew it. It took me about 10 years to hand quilt it - my mil pieced it and I quilted it. So glad that is done. I am currently working on an Irish Chain quilt for my daughter. have a wonderful day. Please keep in touch. Becky

Hello Enid, My name is Becky and I'm from PA. I see your picture of the double wedding ring quilt - it's beautiful, I, too, just finished quilting one. Can I ask you how you measure for the binding with a scalloped edge? I don't know how much yardage to buy for the binding. Thanks
