Welcome to our 'not so little' group of quilters.

Pat is right...we have plenty of good shops here in Cedar Rapids. I think all of them have sale fabrics tucked away, and are good sources of information. And Wal-Mart fabric is not necessarily bad. I have purchased fabric there from time to time. If you know decent fabric, you'd be surprized where you find it. And by the same token, just because it comes from a quilt store does not mean it's perfect. But generally the quality is better. Marcia Hohn has a great website, quilterscache.com. The patterns are free and printable. Many of the online stores have free patterns, too. Some have tutorials as well.

Glendora, The internet is the place to go for quilting help. There are all kinds of free patterns available. One source is About Quilting .com. They have how to do it tutorials. On the forums are people who will answer any questions you might have. Another popular one is Quilter'scache. They have hundreds of free patterns. If you come in to Cedar Rapids,we have 4 good quilt shops and then there is the Amanas adn Kalona,if you hahe time to travel. I imagine tiem is a precious commodity with your brood! Good.luck! Pat A

Glendora-Welcome and glad to see you as a member of our Iowa Quilter's group. You'll find everyone fun and very helpful. My first project was a crib sized simple 4 patch block. Very easy. A word to the wise, be prepared that once you start quilting, it can be very addictive! Your family will only recognize the back of your head!!

Hi Glendora, just keep at it and you'll be hooked! The people here are very inspiring. I've been quilting a long time, but by no means an expert. My goal now is to perfect my skill enough to teach others to quilt. Have fun & happy quilting! Marie

Hi Glendora,
Nice to hear from you. You do realise your life will never be the same again, now you've caught the quilting bug!! It's much more fun ;-) There aren't a huge number of traditional Irish patterns as far as I know. Irish chain, Double Irish chain and Triple Irish chain are the most well known ones. I have a book here (somewhere) written by Helen Hardesty, an Irish woman who returned to Ireland in the 70's/80's and was at the forefront of the Quilting movement here. I'll try and resurrect the book and let you know what I come up with. What kind of quilts do you like? Do you prefer modern or traditional?
