My "reverse sewing" weekend

I'm working on a king-sized quilt for my sister-in-law, and learned a lesson the hard way: ALWAYS check the finished dimensions of the quilt pattern against the finished dimensions of the quilt you actually want to make! I am doing a great Eleanor Burns pattern called Lover's Knot. I have been happily sewing along, putting my blocks into rows and getting ready to sew my rows together, stopping occasionally to admire how the pattern was shaping up and visualizing it with the finished borders in p… Continue

Quilt Auction in Carroll, Iowa - April 25, 2009

I am an active volunteer for New Hope Village of Carroll, IA, a not-for-profit organization serving individuals with disabilities. My son was a resident of New Hope Village for 8 years, until his death last March. We are having our BIENNIAL BENEFIT QUILT AUCTION on Saturday, April 25, 2009. It will be held at the Carrollton Inn, on Hwy 71 in Carroll, just north of the intersection with Hwy 30. We will have 75-100 Quilt items, and both live and silent auctions. There will be an afternoon viewing… Continue

Threads, etc.

I went over to my local quilt shop - Threads, etc. to meet Dot Bushman, the owner. I "met" Dot last week right here at Quilt With Us, and I found it amusing that 2 quilters who live in the same town met on the website. Especially since I am a customer - I can't imagine how I managed to miss her in the shop. I was probably so immersed in the bolts of fabric that I never even looked up. In a quilt store I am just like a kid with ADD, flitting around to the next thing that catches my eye. Anyway, w… Continue

Working in Fits and Starts

Dreary day in NW Iowa today. I am washing/drying/pressing some fabric pieces for my stash. I think I have resolved the tension situation on my Voyager 17 longarm. Now I have to reload my frame (having used up my practice piece). I ordered a cast-iron cone thread holder from Clotilde.com, and I really need that to get my bobbin wound properly. Once I get some bobbins wound and frame re-loaded, I can test drive again and see if the tension is correct. It all looks so simple on the video - - - -

Thanks so much for the resources on the Mar. compass. I just checked our local library's website and it looks like they have the 40 bright and bold pieced blocks from Carol Doak. I will keep an eye out for the other 2 as well. Hope you've had a happy fourth!

Thank you for your comment about why my supervisor reacted the way he did to my quilt gift. I feel your comments may be exactly what happened. I appreciate your insight and thoughtfulness. I feel much better.

Hi Pat,
... thanks for the sweet birthday wishes - I'm sorry it's been a few days since I've been able to respond - my husband and I adopted a dog on Sat. and it's not going all that well with the cat ... I'm exhausted trying to keep the 2 apart. We finally bought a "baby-gate" ... this way Fuffer (dog) won't chase the Fluffy (cat).

thanks pat...you have my sisters name :) She is doing ok but she misses her children and grandchildren. I live on the other side of the state she she is a good distance from them. I don't have the heart to tell her she no longer has a home there. I think it should be up to her children to do that. And even if she was told, I doubt she would remember. Her memory is very bad. I'm glad you enjoyed the quilt tops. I'm hoping to get the one I finished today quilted soon. I'm planning on starting it tomorrow. Hopefully I'll have it totally completed in two weeks....that's my goal anyway...lol.

Pat, Thanks for the comment on my scrappy quilt. I really struggled with it. I'm glad that you like it. Your one block wonder is gorgeous!
