It has been a busy, busy fall so far. And yes, in Manitoba, I can still say fall and not winter. We had +14 today. A perfect day for washing windows and playing outside with my grandboys. And no, My daughter has not had her baby yet, but any day, any hour, any minute, it could happen.
I have been battling a slow moving cold. And just when I thought it was all done with, I think I got a touch of the flu. H1N1? I don't think so, but who knows. It was fairly mild. Just enough to make you feel… Continue

After having a fabulous September with temps way above normal, we have returned to more normal, crispy fall days.
I have had abusy couple of weeks, but finally managed to get back into my quilting room yesterday and finish the machine quilting on two lap quilts. These are for VQC cancer patients. Today I began the quilting process on an heirloom wall hanging that I am doing with handkerchiefs that my MIL saved throughout her lifetime. When she passed away, we found enough of them that each… Continue

Wow, what a night we had last night. We have finally got the heat of summer, but only for a couple of days yet. And when that heat arrives, the humidity soars right along with it. It is days like that, that I stay where it is cool and quilt.
But that is not what I was going to tell you about. Around 5a.m. this morning, I woke the the low grumbling of thunder. Well, if it was going to rain, I had to go and close the windows to make sure that we would not have a lake inside once the… Continue

Well, the wine is bottled and stored away for another ccouple or three months to give it a bit more time to mellow and mature. It is beautiful to look at...it has an orangy blush color. I used rhubarb, prune plums and saskatoon/blueberries in the making and the plums have sure given it a lovely color. Reminds me a bit of a sunset just as the colors are beginning to fade a bit. And hey, the taste is pretty good, too. Not bad for my first attempt at wine making. I don't know if I would ever have… Continue

Well, for the third time this year, the creek down the road from us is overflowing it's banks. The birds that like to nest in the willows and reeds in wet ditches and creek banks will likely have lost their nests again. Luckily, most of the ducks and geese that nest around here have hatched their eggs already and all this extra water will not mean much to them. We had over at least 5 inches of rain in the last day and a half. So, we are experiencing overland flooding as all this water makes its… Continue

Hi everyone. It has been a while since I've added a blog post. Life has been so busy lately, and I cannot see much of a let up for at least another two weeks. I did managae to take time to rack over my wine. It is potent. I will have to sweeten it up some, as I am not a very dry wine lover.
Our Cancer quilting group has been so busy lately. Well, at least the president and myself have been. We have 10 quilts that need to be machine quilted and thank goodness, we have one lady that is… Continue

It's early morning and the sun is up and just a hint of frost on the grass. DH has gone for a walk and it is quiet in the house. What a lovely time of day to be up and enjoying God's handiwork. The early sun puts a golden glow on everything around and one could almost believe that there is absolutely nothing wrong in the world. And for just a moment, I live in that notion. And then I realize that though it would be nice to live in that fantasy, I enjoy the beautiful and quiet and "right"… Continue

Wow, I can hardly believe the look of the country side today. We had rain yesterday, and more rain and more rain and then a bit of snow. As you can see by the above picture of my DH cleaning off the car. And their is just as much water in the ditches and creeks and fields right now, as there was during spring melt. Woke up to -6C and normal temps for this time of year are +20 for the high and +5 for the low. In just over a month, the days start… Continue

Well, spring seems determined to arrive even though the weather has been lousy. Cold, cloudy, rain, snow, cloud and on and on and on. And yet, the birds are busy as ever. I filled the bird feeder this morning and now it is empty already. The white crowned sparrows, pine siskins, chickadees, harris sparrows and the occassional woodpecker and white breasted nuthatch are just pigging out. I think it is time for them to scrounge on the ground for a bit and clean up all the mess they have made. A… Continue

.............., whatever that means to you. I am enjoying our earth here in Manitoba lately. It is still slightly below seasonal normals but we have had some sun and the tulips and rhubarb are struggling valiantly to begin their journey to the sunshine. The first hoard of juncos and redpolls and finches have emptied our feeder several times over and are now on their way further north to their nesting areas. And the Black bears are awake and out of their dens. My neighbour had one wander across… Continue

Well, here I am to keep you posted on my new adventure....winemaking. My friend and I stirred together the new batch of wine (my first) on Tuesday evening. It is a combination of 2/3s rhubarb and 1/3 blue plums and saskatoons. For those of you not familiar with saskatoons, it is very similar to a blueberry but, in my opinion, tastier. It can be domesticated or grow wild as it does around my house. We added the sugar and various things that need to be added. Wed. we added the yeast for the… Continue

It will be a red letter day today. I have wanted to make my own wine for a number of years now, but never quite worked up the nerve to get started. Tonight, my wine-making girlfriend is getting me started. I have all my fruit ready and will take it to her house and do it there. She loves wine making and often makes over 500 bottles of it a year. No, she is not a lush, but she does give most of it away to family and friends. She does not even like the taste of wine that much, just enjoys making… Continue

What a wonderful day it has been, and I am tired. Today was our regular quilting day for VQC. We had 9 ladies show up and had five completed quilts brought in. And then they took fabric home, larger pieces and bits and pieces from the scrap box to make more quilts. How wonderful and giving quilters are!! And to top it all off, the sun has been shining all day and the snow is slowly melting. Just lovely.

Well, it sure seems as if the geese are complaining. They came when the fields were nearly bare and water was open. Then we got a whole whack of snow and it got cold again. Now, they and I are complaining. Ah well, we have always had spring yet, even if it is a little slow int coming some years. I had a lot of opportunity to get a couple of things done in my quilt room and another quilt for VQC started. A black and white and red double dutch quilt, lap size. I have been adding the binding on my… Continue

Well, the last two days, I have been a busy beaver in my quilt room. Since we had freezing rain yesterday and LOTS of snow today, what else could I do? The snow is very sad to see. Our yard was nearly completely clear of snow already and now it is 8 inches deep again. Ah well, this too shall pass. I did another star for my DB quilt and partially finished a top for VQC. I have also been working on my second geisha and have now completed the applique part of it. I am working on the companion… Continue

Wehave had sunny days here, but it seems like more cloud than sun. I know that this is common in early spring, but how I miss the sunshine of New Mexico. Ah, well, summer is coming when we will run for airconditioning and shade. Go figure, eh? We are settling in for a Colorado low coming through here. At least it has warmed up and most of the moisture will come as rain. But we don't need that right now. North and South Dakota have had huge snowfalls this year, and all that melting snow is… Continue

Well friends, plus 6 here today. The snow is shrinking and the sparrows are starting to show off for each other. Do you think that means they are getting spring fever? I know I am. I am beginning to think spring planting and container gardening. And lets not forget quilting. In talking with one of you fabulous people, I am itching to try out dying my own fabrics. I think that will be something that I will play with this spring and summer. Even the birds at our bird feeder have not been eating… Continue

Well, here I sit watching the mercury drop in the thermometer and bracing for a big winter blow. But I can be thankful. Most of the snow is supposed to head further to the south and east of us. Of course, if it snows a lot to the south of us here, we will see the flooding along the Red River in the spring. right now I am cold. Just walked home from my friends house after a morning of sandwiching quilts. I thought that I was taking so much stuff to her house to leave there, but I came home with… Continue

We live in the country and therefore are only eligible for dial up. Having lived in cities and towns for many years, we have been used to high speed and dial up just was not an option for us. So we signed up with a service provider that gives us fairly high speed, but not through the phone lines. We have had so many problems with them. When it works, it works well, but lately there have been many days when we cannot get our email or when we cannot get on line at all. And I value my computer… Continue

A long day and I am tired. But, oh so productive. This is the first Tuesday of the Month when various lovely people get together to quilt for cancer. We got half a dozen finished quilts and quilt tops brought in by our loyal quilters. Such beautiful creations, many of which are made from scraps of this and that. And it warms my heart to know that those suffering from cancer will be warmed by the efforts of many willing and talented hands.
On to another topic. Sunshine today and… Continue
