Bed quilt on a domestic machine. ARRRGGGG

It's been a long time (years) since I tried quilting a bed quilt on a domestic machine and I had forgotten how difficult it can be. It's only a twin and I feel like I am wrestling an alligator! All I am attempting to do is stitch in the ditch between the blocks to stabilize it before I try some free-motion and I feel like I have no control! It's making me NUTS. Basting Quilts - where and how?

Today I have been dithering on where and how to baste my twin sized quilt top (for my DD). I saw a Karen McTavish video and she used foam core insulation boards for blocking and I think that might work for basting on a carpeted area. I have a large area in the finished basement where I can do this without it being in the way of my family. I can also use the boards to cover with felt and use as a design board.
