What kind of backing should I use?

Hey Yawl,

I just finished a flannel quilt and I am confused about what type of backing to use.  Should I use a flannel backing or a regular cotton backing.  Help!

Free motion quilting with the feed dogs up?

I read a wonderful article by Leah Day who quilts with her feed dogs up.  This is interesting to me because I have so much trouble with free motion and having my feed dogs down.  I am going to try this and report my progress back to you'll.  Here is the link for her article http://www.leahday.com/art-dropfeeddogs/

If you free motion with your feed dogs up, please let me know if you like it better than with the feed dogs…

Do you need batting for a blue jean quilt?

Hey Yawl,

I am piecing a blue jean quilt. The jean fabric is pretty heavy and I have decided to use flannel to back it.  Do I need batting or will it be too heavy? I've read a lot of things about this on the internet, but I need advice from my expert neighbors.  What should I do?

Quilts for Oklahoma tornado victims

Hey Yawl,

I know that I am late on this issue, but is anyone sending quilts to the displaced families in Oklahoma? If so, I want to help.  Does anyone have an address that I can send them to and a contact person?

Yes, men do quilt!

I really wish that I had the time to create a quilt to enter into this contest, but unfortunately I do not.  There are male quilters on this blog, so go ahead and show your stuff.  Make me proud. To the women, you are welcomed to cheer.  :-)

Cloth Dolls

Hey Yawl!

It has been a while since I last posted.  All is well.  I am currently enrolled in grad school pursuing a masters in elementary education.  It has been 20yrs since my BS but I'm doing very well in my class.  I've already taken one class and next week will be mid-terms in my 2nd class.  I have 8 more classes to go.  I should graduate in May 2013. It took a minute to dust the cobwebs out of my brain though...lol!

I haven't been doing much quilting lately,…

New Quilt ...... Help!

Hey Yawl,  the quilt is finished. I used hand stitching to create the words (Thanks Joanne/GA).  This one is a doozy because the content of the quilt can be viewed as being harsh, but at the same time, it is rooted in reality.  I hadn't posted a pic because I didn't want to offend, yet at the same time, the quilt speaks the truth. Should I post it for yawl to see, or should I keep this one private? Clarification: The name of the quilt is "The Great Journey"....(from Africa to America).

Quilts for kids

Hey Y'all,

I was surfing the web and came across this website:  www.quiltsforkids.org I'm sure most of you already know about this site, but for those of you that do not, check it out. You are making quilts for sick kids all over the nation.  All you have to do is request that a kit is mailed to you. It's free! I got mine in about 2 days.  Everything is included and already cut for you.  All you have to do is sew it and then make a quilt…

How do I add words to a quilt?

Hey Y'all,

Got a question. How do I add words to a quilt? I've already made the quilt, but I want to add some words to it.  I've thought about embroidery but I don't have an embroidery machine. I've thought about cutting out little rectangles and writing the words on it with a pigment pen and then applique it to the quilt. Painting, stamping, permanent marker.....help! Which one of these methods do you think will work best, if…

Finally finished

Hey Yawl,

Well, I have finally finished my quilt called "Mosaic". I posted about it in December and I just finished it yesterday. I have never gone so long between quilts. I got a little bored and really busy doing other things, so my quilting…

Merry Christmas to my CT family & friends

Hello yawl,

I just wanted to say, "Merry Christmas!" to everyone.  It has been a while since I have posted anything but I'm on the site all the time.  I hadn't been doing much quilting lately, however, today I just finished a quilt top that I call "Mosaic". The blocks had been just sitting around for about 3 months but I never had the time to get around to them, so I made time. I got the pattern out of a quilting magazine (can't remember which one), but I am quite pleased. Hopefully I…

I am currently quilting the black/red/whi triangle quilt....of course by hsm....any way, it started off great...I did some free motion in the top and bottom border...tension was great..stitches looked great...i was on a roll. Then I started on the side borders....all heck broke loose...lol! I could not get the tension corrected for nothing in the world...I had a million birds "nesting" on the back side..lol!....(I don't know why I didn't check the tension on the back after a few stitches -… Continue

I've been searching high and low for the zipper quilt block pattern without much success. Does anyone know where I can get a free pattern to download? Thanks a bunch.

Wall quilts

Hey Y'all,
I've been on a roll lately making wall hangings. My new space is quite small and cramped, so it is a real challenge to make a big quilt. That's one reason the last two projects were wall hangings. I do have a full size quilt that still needs to be quilted. Any whooo, happy quilting y'all.

I'm getting inspired again

Hey Y'all,

Remember when I posted that I wasn't inspired....well...I've gotten some of my inspiration back....it has been about a month since I touched my machine and done any sewing of any kind. This morning I got up with a new attitude and pulled out one of my finished tops. I actually pinned it today! It was not a chore, I actually enjoyed it. LOL! I then got really inspired and finished the mini quilt that I had started..(the one that I did the hand quilting on)...well, as that story… Continue

Not inspired :(

Hey Y'all,
I have 4 projects going at the same time and I am not inspired to complete any of them....I am making a zipped Bible cover (25% done), the hand quilted block (25%), 2 finished quilt tops that need to be quilted (0%)...I love each project, but I have lost some interest in completing them, but deep down in my heart, I really want to finish them so that I can enjoy them. Do you hit a dry spell and if so, what can I do in the meantime until I get that inspiration back?
