Love the promise of a New Year!

I love New Year.  Just the promise of a fresh start is uplifting.  I always believe life will get better and it usually does.  My primary resolution for 2014 is to get my fabric stash organized.  We are setting up IKEA shelving units in what I have dubbed my fabric room.  It's just the back bedroom that could have been a guest room, but no, too much fabric in the house!  My goal for 2013 was to get more involved with my guild and in September I was elected VP Membership for the Coastal…

Summertime Quilt

I am entering a small quilt in my guild's challenge for the first time.  It's small as the challenge rules are 20 x 20 or less.  My question....do I add embellishments first, then do the binding.  Or do I bind it and add embellishments after.  The label is on the back and the very last step will be to do a hanging sleeve.  Help !!

I tried to post a photo but it didn't work.  Sorry.......

Countdown to Intl. Quilt Festival

It's about 6 weeks 'til Quilt Festival here in Houston. I volunteered to work at the American Sewing Guild booth. I will get FREE admittance on the days I work. As of now, it looks like I will be working 2 of the 4 days of Festival. The ASG booth is usually set up in the area of the convention center where the exhibits are located. I should be able to take short breaks and check out the various exhibits there. I'm so excited! I'm planning on staying away from the vendors. I know… Continue

I Opened My Mouth and It Just Came Out!

Yesterday I was mean to my mommie. Do I sound like a 6 yr. old? That's how I felt afterward. My mom was here yesterday with my sis "L" and we were discussing my upcoming move (still in the planning stages). I was talking about all the things I plan to sell or donate before the move. Both of them said "no! give those things to me!" It was like an echo chamber in here. I said "NO, both of you have too much sh_ _ in your homes!" THEN, I felt sorry for what I said so immediately I turned red.… Continue

Is QWU like a vitamin?

I check in here 1st thing every day. I drink my morning diet coke and read the latest blogs. I lay down my head every night and pray for my family, my friends, my country and my fellow QWU members that are experiencing troubles in their life. These are things I do daily, like taking a vitamin. I'm so relieved that Pam in NY state is on the mend; I can't wait to visit Paula in Waller and see the new house and I will eventually make it to NH in the Autumn to meet Aida in person. I… Continue

Thy Will Be Done (or don't fight with God)

I've been doing a lot of praying lately. I have always been big on prayer, most often prayers of "thanksgiving" such as when I'm driving in Houston's insane traffic and barely miss being wiped out, but I'm talking a lot more than usual. I've been blessed with a profound sense of faith which I come by naturally. I'm not one who has to strain to find God or some "higher power". Today I have come to the conclusion that if I'm not finding a job it must be God's Will. Thy Will Be Done is part of… Continue

No Blog from Me in August - I'm TOO Boring!

The whole month of August is just about gone and I have yet to post a blog this month. The only reason is that I'm just too boring this month. I haven't found a job yet, this is old news. My 2 sisters are still making me crazy, more old news. I spend all day on the computer instead of the Pfaff, even more old news. The worst part is that I'm not comfortable leaving the apartment during the day because we were burglarized on 07/28/10 while I was out for less than 2 hrs. running… Continue

One Sister is Good....Two Sisters Make You Head Hurt

I spent all day yesterday with both my sisters. I usually limit my exposure to either one at a time or with a large group. Sister L is 2-1/2 yrs. younger than I and we share the same history, sister J was born when I was 14 and I left home when she was only 6. Sister L is so much like our mom and sister J is so much like "me". They are both my best friends but they are too crazy and funny to be around both at the same time for a whole day. We ate lunch, shopped, laughed and drove… Continue

I had a great birthday! Thanks!

Thank you all for the great Happy Birthday wishes! We had our luncheon at Sweet Tomatoes, then went to my sis' home and talked each other's ears off for hours. My niece slept on the couch and we all embarrassed her by treating her like the cute baby that's especially good while asleep. BTW my niece is 21 and will be a senior at OU this fall. My son and brother in law installed new software on BIL's computer and we all cheered when the installation was successful. We watched the huge fireworks… Continue

My Birthday-Early in the Day

Today is my birthday. So far it's been the usual, some good some not so good. My son gave me a beautiful Hallmark card, that made me cry a little. My birthday luncheon got postponed until tomorrow; my BIL's dad has been admitted to hospital, they suspect some serious liver disease, maybe cancer. My niece came in from Norman, OK (she's a Sooner) to surprise us. Son & I had delish breakfast tacos from my fave taqueria. My gift from son is to be a new sofa so we're off to furniture shopping.… Continue

I'm Still Kickin'!!

Tomorrow is my birthday, I'll be 61, Surprise to Me! I'm one of those that had a lot of misconceptions about getting old(er). Now, not so much. I wore pastel dresses with ties that made a big bow in the back, danced the mashed potatoes, loved music; Motown, Paul Simon, rock & roll in all it's phases. I was 14 in algebra class when we learned our President had been killed in Dallas. Worried and cried not only for the loss of the great man but also for the fear that now… Continue

Gift Cards Make Me Happy!

I love gift cards! I don't think they're inpersonal at all. I ask for them when someone wants to know what to give me for an occassion. I asked my son for a CT gift card for Mother's Day. I've spent some time this morning shopping the tools & books sale on this website. Too much fun for one day. So, because that has left me in such an upbeat mood, I will spend the balance of my day doing housework. Yes! I have to be bribed in order to do housework these days. I remember when… Continue

Can You Conquer the World When you Have Cute Hair?

I've been lazy plus, plus the past few weeks. Not getting anything accomplished and lately not even thinking of what needs doing. Well, yesterday afternoon I just got tired of myself and said "enough". So I went trolling for a haircut. Have fired my share of hair stylists in my time, so was looking for a replacement. I went to an old Houston neighborhood that has lots of Hispanic shops and businesses. Found him! I do this sometimes, I just let the force guide me and I end up happy. His name is… Continue

Magazine Giveaway - Part 2

I have a lot of older magazines to give away. Some of them might appeal more to the beginning quilters as they have such basic information and classic patterns that are not included in the current issues of quilt magazines. These basics in the older magazines helped me learn so much when I started quilting. If anyone would like to have a really old quilt magazine just for "fun" let me know. I have some that have no reference to internet sites or all the newer gadgets we take for granted.… Continue

Magazine Giveaway!

I'm trying to give away quilt magazines. I have already offered them to three of my groups here and have had no "takers". I have a move coming up later this year and need to purge. I have magazines coming out my ears! If you would like a few, let me know. Please! It also would be helpful to know if you would be interested in having a specific magazine. I have only tossed or given away approx. 10% of the magazines I've collected in the last 15 years. I don't belong to an organized guild or quilt… Continue

Will work for fabric.

Most of my friends are aware that I have been job searching for the past few months. Due to the current state of the economy there have been so few jobs available and as yet I have not been successful. Yesterday, I actually admitted to a headhunter that I needed a job soon because while unemployment income does pay my bills it doesn't leave me enough to buy fabric for quilting. I also told him that I have intentions of buying the new Sashiko sewing machine and that will take "big bucks" that… Continue

Are You Keeping Records?

I've decided that I need to compile a list of my all quilting books. Last week I almost ordered a book I already have. I have become interested in Carol Doak's paper piecing and was going to order a book of hers & then I found it on my bookshelf. I bought it sometime in the last couple of yrs. from Half Price Books. Now I wish that I had made a note in ea. book as to date I got it, where or who gave it to me, etc. Going back thru ea. book on my shelves is so much fun. Even if I never used a… Continue

Making Tamales Today!

Today my two sisters, my niece and nephew, my son, my BIL, and a few unsuspecting "Anglos" are getting together to make tamales for our Christmas Eve dinner. In our family, this is a tradition that skipped a generation. My Mom and her sisters didn't make tamales, but my grandmother did. My sister and I both married into families that were more traditional than ours and now we have adopted an old Tex-Mex tradition of making tamales for Christmas. They are so GOOD!!!! I wish we would make them… Continue

A Better November

Dear QWU friends, thank you for improving what is usually a low point in my year, the month of November. My sweet daughter, Jennifer, was born Nov. 9, 1970 & passed from this life on Nov. 28 1985. She suffered a cerebral hemorage so was not ill before her death. That day was also Thanksgiving day. So as you can imagine every year since 1985 the month of November is "difficult". Jennifer was spunky, petite & precocious. She attended a school for gifted children until the last 2 yrs when… Continue
