Remembrance Day in Canada

At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we remember them. To my fellow Canadian Quilters - please wear your poppy. Continue

More Chocolate Please!

I went on a nearly-two-hour road trip with a friend today - to Courtenay, BC where there is a store called "Hot Chocolate". It was cold, windy and raining. I directed my friend to 5th Street. She is unfamiliar with Courtenay. We got out and wandered to where Hot Chocolate had been and IT WASN'T THERE!!!!! Then I remembered that another friend had told me it had moved, but I couldn't remember where. We ran back to the car (dodging raindrops), hopped in (cranked the heater and defroster) and were… Continue

It was a Lovely Evening

I had a lovely dinner and visit with Pat from the UK and her husband. We were not able to figure out the connection based on the limited information I have, but we think it goes back to my great-great grandfather. Further research is required. I gave them some copies of old family photos and I think I saw a *very* slight resemblance between Pat's husband and my grandfather ... ! They are on their way to Alaska tomorrow and I understand they are meeting another QWU member in Juneau. I am quite s… Continue

I Met Family on this Site!

Tomorrow I will meet a relative of some degree who is also a member of QWU. She is coming to Vancouver, BC Canada from England to go on an Alaskan cruise. We don't yet know how we are related, but I am sure we will be able to figure it out. It's probably at least 3 or 4 generations back. I am very excited to meet her! Continue

CHEERIES

A few years ago, on one of the first lovely, warm summery days in July, I saw a sign advertising "cheeries" above a basket of beautiful, black, juicy cherries. I thought "how true - cheeries". Nothing says "cheery" quite like "cherries". Anyway, fast-forward about 5 years. We are living on our dream property. It has eight apple trees, one yellow plum tree, one peach tree, one pear tree, two hazelnut trees, one newly-purchased Italian prune plum tree, peach tree and Bing cherry tree. Two mature… Continue

What Happened to Quilt With Us Last Night?

I know haven't been posting things lately (home renos, gardening, guests, travel, etc.), but I HAVE been keeping up with my reading on this site. Last night at about 10:30 our time (PDT), Quilt with Us was undergoing 'maintenance' again. I tried to access the site several times and gave up. If I remember correctly, this happened a couple of weeks ago and Karen's response was that it was not Quilt with Us admin. Was anyone else affected by this 'maintenance' last night and is it something that w… Continue

NO QUILTING!

I have had lots of wonderful things happen in the past few weeks! We have had three different groups of weekend house-guests, including my sister and brother-in-law from London, Ontario who plan to move to Vancouver Island in a year or so when he retires. They picked up a much-loved family friend in Victoria and brought her with them to our house for a "sleepover" visit. Fortunately, the weather has been fabulous - and just a bit too hot for my liking - so we were able to spend a lot of time out… Continue

GO FOR IT SUSAN BOYLE!

Some years ago, I took a clothing pattern drafting course. My instructor was Kian Samet and I will never forget her. As a result of the course and my alleged skill with a sewing machine and threaded needle, I was asked to draft patterns for and sew a graduation dress for the daughter of a friend's friend and a wedding outfit for another friend and her maid of honour. I also made a bride's and three bridesmaids' dresses, headpieces, groomsmen's shirts and cummerbunds (all except headpieces and… Continue

THREE DREADED CHORES DONE TODAY

I have had a productive day - I caught up on the household filing AND got our income tax stuff ready to send to our accountant (my former employer!) AND weeded the garden area where the Japanese quince grows right beneath our bedroom window. There's mint there too, so it smelled lovely. This part of the garden is the sunniest, most protected area surrounding the house and I dread weeding there because it's a snake haven. Fortunately, I saw only a tree frog and one spider. (Of course, I do take t… Continue

I SHOULD LEARN TO KEEP MY MOUTH SHUT

The Great Wallpaper Caper continues. Someone in our house has suggested that since there will be plenty of wallpaper stripper solution left to finish the kitchen and there will be plenty of wallpaper left after the kitchen is finished that that someone should continue with stripping wallpaper. In the hallway - a border print on both walls. In the room with no name (aquarium/librarium?). Two border prints on three walls. The front entrance - and while this is the smallest area, it wins the "ugli… Continue
