Big Stitch hand quilting

I am working on a flannel baby quilt, so I'm doing some "big stitch" hand quilting for the first time.  Let me tell you that when I look at those larger stitches (around 1/8") of perle coton (pearl cotton), the phrase "toenails catchers" keeps running through my mind.  It was pretty ingrained in me to keep my hand quilting stitches tiny and even, so the big stitch quilting concept is a tough paradigm for me to get around.

Mini Rant

Today I started a baby quilt using a bundle of fat quarter flannels.  With the pattern I chose, I had exactly the right number of FQs to make the quilt and it would use up virtually the entire FQ. The block calls for four 8.5" blocks of each of 5 feature fabrics and then yardage for the background.  I started ironing and cutting and - wouldn't you know - when I unfolded the last FQ, it came apart in pieces.   The frustrating part is that I didn't even get enough pieces to …
