Happy New Year!

To all my dear QWU friends: I received this humurous wish earlier and I want to share it with you:
A Prosperous New Year to you - South African style. May good luck stalk you. May joy attack you wherever you go. May your sorrows be hi-jacked. May your trouble be stolen. May your worries disappear like a BMW in Soweto. :o)
That is only tongue in the cheeck. My personal wish is that God will be with you all in 2012 and of course, I wish you many happy quilting hours!

Doily with beads

I know, I know! This is a quilt site, BUT experience taught me that quilters are very often creative in other areas too!  My question is: are any of you familiar with a beaded doily?  Did your mom or granny use them too? For some reason I am not able to post the picture here, but you will find a pic on my page.  I didn't crochet this doily myself, but inherited it from my granny who died at the age of 89 a few years ago.  People from those "long ago" times used these doilies to cover their…

Sewing Bagsket

I made this sewing "bagsket" with my embroidery machine.

It is a combination between a bag and basket and is ideal to take your FQ's or sewing things to class!  Pics of all the panels are on my profile. (There are 6 different…

My first little Christmas gift...the "in the hoop" Owl Sewing Kit.  I enjoyed it tremendously to make this little fellow!!

Doesn't he look very wise with his big eyes and "glasses"?  When he closes his wings, all the sewing things are kept safe.

Quilt label

My DMIL's quilt is done at last!  I am sure she will love it...

I made the quilt label...a fabric letter in a fabric envelope.  The "letter" is attached to the "envelope" with a ribbon.  On the photo here the "letter" is obviously not sewn to the back of the quilt yet...…

My heart goes out to all my American friends, because of the bad weather you are experiencing at the moment.  The whole tornado thing sounds terrifying to me.  Even here in South Africa where I am, we experience weather uncommon for this time of year.  I live in a summer rainfall region, but allthough it is already the end of May, we still get rain.  We only had our first real frost last night.  I pray that you'll all be safe and that the weather situation will very soon improve.  Blessings!

Vintage aircraft panel

I'm looking for a quilt panel or fabric printed with vintage aircraft.  My son wants a wall hanging, it must have an aircraft theme...and "please, not for like toddlers, Mom?" (he is 13 years old.) Where can I buy something like that online?  My google search delivered no positive results.  Can anyone help please?

Ouch! A painful process!

Ouch... it's really painful (literally) to make your quilt sandwich - on all fours on the dining room floor!  I realized this when I woke up this morning with pains in places I never knew existed. Lol!  Saturday was the perfect day for this job.  Leon and the boys helped to push the heavy dining room furniture aside.  After a bit of "coaxing" the boys were eager to help me stretch and tape the back fabric to the floor.  How did I bribe them?  With a piece of carrot cake of course!  Yesterday…

Easter memories...

Last year, Easter Sunday, Leon and I attended the church service in the Salzburger Dom Cathedral in Austria.  Very uncertain of what to expect, we took our seats in the back pews.  Of course we understood very little of the service in German, but when the congregation sang Heilig, heilig, heilig, heilig ist der Herr!  we sang with great enthusiasm...in Afrikaans: Heilig, Heilig, Heilig, Heilig is die Heer!  The memory of this Sunday will stay with me forever!! Also the sound… Continue

Quilted crochet bag

The weather is turning into autumn here, and while it is getting cooler, I want to take out my crochet work again to finish my blanket...  I got this wonderful idea from my sister-in-law.  A bag to put the yarn in, with eyelets on top to pull it through while you are crocheting...

Life is about experiences!

Life is all about experiences! Good experiences create good memories.  This is exactly what happened this previous weekend.  Neil Diamond is currently on tour in South Africa for the first time ever.  My hubby especially is a big fan and last year when reservations opened we realized our budget isn't going to allow Mr Diamond's show... You can imagine our excitement when hubby received an invitation last week to attend the show as guests of a company they are doing business with!  And what a…

Jelly roll progress

October last year I asked for suggestions for patterns for a jelly roll quilt.  I bought a jelly roll and wanted to make a lapsize quilt for my MIL.  Gayle suggested I buy the book Jelly Roll Quilts from Pam & Nicky Lintott.  I did exactly that (thanks a lot Gayle!!) and this is my progress...

I love the colours of the fabric.  The quilt will be 16 blocks…

About bread

Hi Ladies! I know this is a quilting site and not about food, but I thought maybe the ladies who are creative with needles will be creative in the kitchen too? Lol! ;o)  My question is: do you have any ideas for filling bread?  I have to use french or other long breads, cut them into thick slices (not right through) and put fillings in.  Cold or warm. I have to make this for the "tea" after the World day of Prayer for women at my church. Thank you!

My African Dream

Cos' in my African Dream

There's a new tomorrow

Cos' in my African Dream

There's a dream that we can follow...

This is the inspiration for my blocks I'm busy making.  I make these blocks for our quilt swap at Block Swappers, Inc.  This song particularly inspired me.  This version is by the Soweto Gospel Choir.

Home sweet home!

We're home after another wonderful family holiday!  We were so blessed to be able to go to the Western Cape province (about 1400 km) from home.  I will write a blog later with more holiday photo's, but I have to put in only one... Table mountain - Cape Town.

Anyway, today it is back to reality!  Leon started work again after 4 weeks of holiday and the boys will…

Welcome in Africa (3)

Sand, sand and more sand! This is one of my lasting impressions of the beautiful country of Mozambique. We visited Moz in July this year. The pic above is taken in the small village of Ponta d'Ouro where we stayed. Moz is situated on the Sout Eastern coast of Africa between Tanzania and South Africa. According to statistics just under 21 million people live in Mozambique. Life expectancy is around 40 years. Birth rate is on average 5.29 per woman.…

Welcome in Africa (2)

We had the wonderful opportunity this weekend to visit one of the Big 5 (forgive the pun) of tourist attractions in South Africa! Since I was a small girl my parents took us to the Kruger National Park and now we do this with the boys! Enjoy the animals with us!

The elephant is my favourite wild animal in the park. They are huge, but move so quietly that you can't hear a thing.…

Jelly Roll Pattern

Good morning ladies! My husband bought me a Moda Summer's End Jelly Roll to make a lapsize quilt for my mother-in-law. I have a few projects going on at the moment, but in the meantime I would like to search for the "perfect pattern". (I consider it part of the fun!) Can anyone please suggest a jelly roll pattern that I can use? Or a website I can find one? Thank you!

Rocky Mountains in Africa

On my husband's recent business trip to the small village of Winterton in the Drakensberg Mountains, we came across this restaurant. I immediately thought about my friends from America and Canada. The restaurant is a well known, chain restaurant here with all American names, like Nebraska, Montana etc...

Progress on "Country Lane" Blocks

I had a rather productive day with hubby away on a business trip to Botswana and the boys having school holiday. I made good progress on my Swap#3 blocks and started with my "homework" on the Country Lane quilt. We have 5 blocks to finish in the next month. I did the applique on the 3 houses block...

This is only the "fabric work"... We are still going to add embroidery, small beads for the door knobs etc. The third house has…
