Quilt With Us

Good morning, afternoon, evening

Many of you know that I just bought the brother PS 1500 machine for doing quilting.  This is a new adventure for me as I have been doing quilting on my longarm.  Call it age or gravity, whatever, I have found that I can't handle standing for long periods of time after I get home from the day job. I have been playing around a bit with the free motion quilting on this brother machine and I do like it except, (you knew that there had to be and exception) the left and right hands don't want to work together! I blame that on the day job, the right hand doesn't care about the left hand and vise-versa. I have figured that some how at work I will have to make the two of them work together.  My question here is what do those of you who use a domestic sewing machine for quilting use on your hands? I've tried the gloves and I just don't care for them.  I've been looking at different things such as the halo or rubber fingers used in standard offices supplies. I was looking on Amazon and found jelly thimbles. I wanted to know if anyone has tried these and whether you like them or not.

Any help getting the hands to move the quilt around the machine would be helpful.

Kathy, I picked up my garden gloves at WinnCo. for super cheap. I love, love, love them. The fabric is super thin and stretchy, and the entire palms and fingers are rubberized.

I use gloves with the little dots on them.  My quilting friend gave me this tip:  If you have speed control on your machine, set it at a comfortable speed so that when you sew, just "floor" the foot pedal to where you set the "comfortable" speed and concentrate on your hands.  That way you don't have to think about what your foot is doing.  Hope that makes sense.

Thanks everyone for the comments.  I went ahead and ordered these jelly thimbles.  I'm also going to pick up a pair of the garden gloves and see what works for me.

Shannon: DD had picked the name Aiden Ryan but has now had second thoughts about that.  She may go with Aiden Christopher....I'll check the birth certificate and let you know.

just in case anyone was interested, I looked up Aiden in the baby book. The name means "little fire"  I'm thinking he is going to be a little spitfire myself.  The boy has endured all her hardships and hasn't even been born yet!

Irene, google it and there's many places to order...make sure it's the supreme...it's the biggest.

omg Kathy!! this is the longest pregnancy in the books!! there are other things they can do instead of an epidural. we have come a long way in L and D. praying that she has no more bumps in the road so to speak. must look up the supreme slider. does Aiden have a middle name yet? I think it should be Slugger :o)

Irene, Nancy's Notions was where I got mine.  Quilt shops sometimes have them if they have classes in home machine quilting.

That's what I use Carol Ann.  So far I like them.  But I need to get the supreme slider. Where do you buy that?

I use "Machinigars" (sp?), a white glove made for machine quilting that comes in sizes, "breathes" and is not too warm to wear, along with the Supreme Slider.  I need to use both hands and not just my finger tips for best results.  Keeping my fingers crossed for your DD!

I have a love/hate relationship with the gloves. I do have a pair that are very lightweight and fit like a second skin (and wouldn't you know they are packed away so I can't tell you what they are). I use them sometimes, just depends on what kind of quilting I am doing. Hope you find what works best for you. Been thinking of you and your DD. HUGS

Shannon: DD is doing very good this month.  She saw an OB Specialist who is going to work with her regular OB dr for delivery.  Down side is that with the blood thinners she is on: no epidural for delivery. OUCH! Baby Aiden is doing very well, they estimate his weight at 5 1/2 lbs so far and normal due date Feb 22 they will move that up to change DD blood thinners and induce labor.

Pam: I do have the slider and it helps but my fingers are the problem.

Cindy: I Have looked at the garden gloves as well and may just pick up a pair the next trip to Home Depot. Thanks
