Quilt With Us

Hwy near Lake Powel
As promished I have a few photos of the 2nd to the last day of our almost endless journey. I wanted to share them with you for their beauty and if you're like me, you have never seen anything like it. The dam and trees photos are no big deal but it was part of the jouney that got us to 10,000 feet. So pull out your Atlas and find Flagstaff AZ. Head north on hwy 89 and you will see Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon Dam.

Driving over Glen Canyon Dam (beautiful area) Continue following hwy 89 north into Utah, our goal, Hwy 15. So we decide to cut over to 15 via the darkest "red road" thinking we were doing the "right thing". So with that said look at hwy 14--thick dark red, right? now check out hwy 21 just a little north.... thin lighter red. What would you have choosen? We took Hwy 14 and had the drive of our lives. Here is a going UP photo

Pit stop part way up - lava beds and a lake with no inlet or outlet. It just seeps out thru holes in the earth...Evidence of mankind trying to harness the lake with an earthen dam.

On top. A bad shot thru the drivers window but gives you an idea of being on top of the world.

And finally going down. When we got into Beaver UT for the night, we were told by the RV Park guy we should have taken Hwy 20....."everyone knows that!" he said. who knew!!! Now, I ask....did YOU know? I think it's time to write Rand McNally and have them change the color of their "red" roads. So end of Journey. Hip-Hip-Huray (this leg has been dub'd "The damn dam" drive by DH)

That is too funny... we did a trip something like that once.... we were looking for a cave that the kids wanted to explore....ha! We followed the signs and ended driving up and down hills until we hit a covered bridge at the bottom of a big hill.... and guess what? The MH didn't clear the bridge so we had to back up for about 5 miles until we got to a driveway or sorts to turn around.... we had that one labelled to... but I won't mention what!.... lolol ... we'll just say, we won't be looking for a cave anytime in the future..LOLOL but look at all the good memories we have eh? Great stuff Debbie, tks for sharing.

I can see you had fun going up and coming down but worth the view I'm sure by your photo's. By the way Debbie the After School Club is going well and we have 8 registered and the kids are enjoying it immensely. They are having fun. Will have their pillows finished next week. So hope to get photo's of them with their project. How was the show did you get plenty of orders?

We had a great dam experience--went from Vancouver to the Okanagan Valley on Canada 1--great highway, turned south and decided to explore another route home. Just south of the border, in Wash. there was a sorta parallel road, looked a little windy--I can't remember the name of the pass or dam way down in the valley from the top of the world, but the view was beautiful, unless you're looking straight down from the passenger side!! Since I was driving our camperized van, I wasn't the one making pb&j sandwiches on the fly. It was a lumber road, dirt, 1 descent lane and every mile an area to turn into to meet the trucks--PTL!! we didn't meet any! Once on the road there was no alternative other than backing out for several miles--wonder if the road is still there?--this was 35 years ago!! The dam was huge, even from several miles above it!!

Quite an adventure. The views are fantastic, even if you felt like hanging at the edge of the road. When you related this event earlier I thought you went through the Oregon Pass, I was told this was a hairy trail to take.

You made it and had a great experience--what could be better? My husband is no longer allowed to navigate. We were in the Colorado mountains, I was driving the minivan--he says go up this road, it's a shortcut. I'm looking at a dirt road and going, oh no. Stopped to ask a ranger type--he almost busted a gut laughing at the idea. I lost part of my muffler after we turned around. Maps in the wrong hands are very dangerous. Glad you're home safe.
