Quilt With Us

My bow tie quilt made from "The Ladies" quilt block exchange. Five of us each made blocks for each other and then we all put our quilts together.   We all picked our background colors (mine was white on white) and told what fabrics we wanted.  I wanted mine to be scrappy with a vintage layout and look and quilted it with a very simple design. I didn't like the flapping 3-D centers so I quilted the edges with a tiny zip zag to hold them down.  I found a scrap of light blue fabric with tiny bows which I added to the bow tie corners which gives the appearance of snowball blocks.  This helped break up the white center.  The pattern is the very easy 10 minute block.  The back is nice and warm flannel. Now I have my own quilt to snuggle up with. I have always made quilts for others so this is my first quilt for myself....woo hoo!!  It is yet to be named, but I am thinking "Tie One On" is appropriate!

The quilts designed by the other ladies in our group are fabulous.  Some used Christmas fabrics and some chose different layouts.  They turned out beautiful and everyone was so creative!

Suzanne McNeil has a book and a You Tube video for the 10 - Minute Block.  It is such a simple block.  Two of us made our blocks 12 " and the others made smaller blocks   The other lady who used 12" blocks asked that her blocks be made with blues, greens, teals and aquas (and white) and it turned out beautiful.  Two ladies specified they wanted Christmas quilts and the other used more toned down fabrics.  It is a good way to use up scrap fabric.  The fun part was we told each other what size block and what theme.  In one of the Christmas quilts the green center piece was provided to us and I tell you, it was the cutest quit.  It is amazing what everyone came up with!  I sewed a small block diagonally to each white square corner using a scrap piece of fabric which was blue with very tiny bow ties.  The hardest part for me what picking out the binding!  My next one is going to be a baby quilt.  I hope you make this quilt and if you do, please send me a photo.  I am now hooked on this pattern so much that I made a Pinterest Bow Tie Quilt board!  LOL

Thanks everyone.  It was very fun to make and so meaningful to have blocks from friends.  I forgot to add that the backing is a aqua flannel with blue strawberries that I got at a garage sale for $1.00. It was brand new (about 7 yards) just calling my name.  Seriously!  I still have more flannel left.  I told myself I wasn't going to buy any fabric for this quilt and I didn't.  (smile/wink!)

Really nice, Paula.  I love traditional block patterns.  And the bonus with friendship quilts is all the memories it brings to mind each time you use it.

This is great Paula.  I made a quilt using this same block a few yrs ago and the floppy center bothered me too.  I found buttons that looked like they were custom made to go with one of the fabrics so I put one in the center of each block.
