Comment by AidaCJ/NH on February 21, 2013 at 10:32am Welcome! Just dive right in. You are in good company, we won't let you sink or drown, we've been in your shoes before.
Comment by Barbara Graham on February 21, 2013 at 9:22am Welcome! One things we quilters do well is offer advice, sometimes you don't even have to ask for it. A great beginners project is a sampler quilt. There are patterns all over the internet, books of rotary cut block patterns. Just pick one block pattern and make it, then another. Watch to make sure you're making all the same size blocks--12" is a good beginner size. Have fun. (as you might guess--I often don't have a plan)
Comment by Debbie Snyder/WA on February 21, 2013 at 6:39am Yes! Welcome to the site and welcome to the quilting world. Consider browsing thru the "Pattern" section of Connecting Threads, specifically the "Downloadables" ....They have a ton of patterns and for just a few dollars. When you see something that tickles your fancy, click on it and it can be in your computer almost instantly. Good luck. Be sure to let us know what you decided on. It might not even be a quilt.....you may find a bag, tote, wall hanger, organizer or something else all together.
Comment by Irene Gallway on February 21, 2013 at 6:31am Welcome "new kid". I have to agree with the other ladies here that starting out with easier patterns would be a better idea. I love Eleanor Burns patterns and technique. I have been quilting 10-11 years and still perfer smaller projects. It's my way of getting more done as well as practicing all the things that makes your work look better. Like how to iron the seams so they lock together, cutting straight, uniform 1/4 seams etc. There is so much to learn and the most important part is to enjoy the process. I'm still practicing on making perfect points. I find the 10 minute block fun to do and you can find that video by going to You Tube and typing in 10 minute block. Lots of fun stuff out there that is simple and fun.
Comment by Prairie Quilter/NE on February 21, 2013 at 6:15am I always like the timeless snowball and nine-patch blocks when set together. They are both fairly simple blocks with great results. Granted, you'll end up with a more traditional looking quilt.
You could always join in with the Mystery Quilt here on QWU. It would be both fun and a challenge. Also any help you'd need would be available.
Sounds like you are on the road to a lot of fun today! Welcome to the site! We look forward to seeing your projects and following your progress.
Comment by Pam/NY on February 21, 2013 at 4:31am Welcome to the site and the quilting world. I agree with what everyone said. If, I were just starting out...I would keep a journal and photo of everything I made and where it ended up. I have lost track of many items and it would be fun to look back and see the beginning.
Comment by Mary, Tewksbury MA on February 21, 2013 at 4:06am Welcome! Tons of patterns online- just have to look them over and see what appeals to you. Quilt magazines can become addictive, I love looking at the quilts and reading how they were made. Is there a quilt shop near you?
Don't know how long you've been sewing but my advise would be to start with a easy or beginner pattern to start. Yellow Brick Road is a tried and true beginner pattern, introduces you to cutting, gives you a feel for quilting instructions and is pretty hard to mess up. I've only been quilting since June 2010 so I'm still new to this too. I'm sure once you get started you'll be hooked like the rest of us.
Comment by Carol Ann Hinton on February 20, 2013 at 9:20pm O.K., welcome! Shannon has a good idea there, but remember quilting is addictive and contagious. It's not called "quilt pox" for nothing! I've had it for more than 20 years. There is no pattern than has not been done by someone somewhere sometime. Search out the ones you like and have at it! Good luck, and stay in touch. :-)
Comment by Shannon, ON on February 20, 2013 at 8:16pm hello new kid:o)
if you google "free quilt patterns" you will find a ton. Quilter's Cache is another good place to start. Pick 2 blocks that you like and whip up a quilt! also google images of "quilts". Many quilting blogs offer free original patterns as well. That should keep you busy for a decade or two :o)
