When I helped my DGD sew a quilt (doll quilt first), I used a practice technique that my Mom used when she taught us 5 sisters to sew. We sewed without thread on lined paper until we learned to sew a straight line; works great. DGD caught on quickly. Happy quilting.
Comment by Debbie Snyder/WA on February 19, 2013 at 6:50am I too am sorry to hear about your mom. It's hard to make such a decission but we all know our parents need to be were they get the BEST of help. You are such a nice (almost) grandma...I love that you are introducing these kids to quilting. They'll find their groove and before you know it will be on their own. Enjoy your week off......
Comment by Barb/WI on February 18, 2013 at 5:56pm I am sorry to hear about your mom. I've also been through that with my mother and MIL. Please, take good care of yourself; stress is hard on a body.
Have fun with the new techy toys!
Comment by Barbara Graham on February 18, 2013 at 10:20am Good to hear from you Terry. I'm so sorry about your mom--and totally understand. As hard as it is to deal with, thank goodness for assisted care and nursing homes. Like having a sick mom isn't enough stress for you, adding in the computer and Elna issues is overload. Good to hear you've been adopted by two chldren and two new machines. They will make you sew happy.
Terry, I'm sorry to hear about your mom. It is never easy to deal with major health issues with our elderly parents. Have fun teaching the neighbor kids to sew. That should be a lot of fun. You can buy a 1/4" piecing foot with the flange for your Viking as well. That should help keep them "on the straight & narrow"!
Comment by Carol Ann Hinton on February 18, 2013 at 6:56am My sympathy, Terry, with your mother's ordeal. I'm sure it is stressful for her too.
I also use a MacBook Pro to cruise the internet; I almost cannot function on my DH's Windows machine! I love the Mac. I have found, however, when dealing with our internet service "Help" people, they are less experienced with Mac users and sometimes are little or no help.
When I taught young people to sew, they had great success using a quarter-inch foot that has a flange on the right against which they could line up the fabric edge, and setting the speed control on the slow side. Both Janome and Bernina make this foot for their respective machines, and have speed limits.
Have a happy week off!
Comment by Irene Gallway on February 18, 2013 at 4:43am Here's wishing you a good un-interrupted week off to play in your sewing room. I too am sorry to hear about your mother. I have been in those shoes. Pam is right it's very stressful. Teaching the young girls to sew is rewarding when they start to take off on their own. I taught my granddaughter to sew when she was 10. At age 11 she made her first quilt ( with my help ) and did a real good job on it. I am really proud that she still likes to sew.
Comment by Mary, Tewksbury MA on February 18, 2013 at 4:42am Sorry to hear of your Mom's illness- hard adjustment but she needed to be somewhere safe with people available 24/7 to help her.
New machines and new computer- sounds like fun! I use a Mac, love it.
Ahren and Abby still young- they'll get seam allowances in time. PJ pants may be easier, I'd try without drawing lines. Got to learn and learning to rip out seams is part of the experience!
Comment by Pam/NY on February 18, 2013 at 4:29am Sorry to hear about your mom. We went through the same thing last summer with my MIL. Very stressful....I smiled when I read that you have two new machines...you have all the toys! This is a cold week to have off. The girls will learn so much from you, that they will use forever. I can hear the giggles! We have Macs and an Ipad. You'll love them...Enjoy the time off!
