Quilt With Us

Haven't been posting much, but need chatter.....

We have been having a cool summer and the veggie garden is just now starting to come on, but have had a beautiful flower garden this year.

I am still working with my charity group and have gotten three quilts made.  Will post pictures later after they are finished.  One was a red, white, and blue stars for the VA hospital. One was lady bugs and flowers applique and the other is large pinwheels made with poka dot material.  (Lady bugs also poka dot)

Our longarm quilter moved and we are taking much longer to finish quilts.  I have started to put some on my frame and we are pinning and tieing some.  Have about 20 more to do and I prefer making tops.

Yes be sure that the organization you are making quilts for want them......We have found that the ones we spend alot of time doing like my applique or stars often get taken by staff for personal use.  One day our longarm quilter was talking to her neighbor and found out she had 6 of our quilts and was going to give them to her grandchildren.  She does not even work at the hospital, just had a friend who took them for her.  Our label was on them and we were pretty upset.  Our group has started to make quick pieced quilts with 6" sqs. and not my favorite kind.  We are also making quilts for the VA hospital and they want walker bags as well.  They told us that they do not have to be quilts of valor and love 48" square quilts for wheelchair use.

My DH and I have been trying to get in more excerise and have been biking and walking alot.  We are walking about 4-5 miles every other day now and getting in 10 mile bike rides.  As we get older we are determined to continue moving.  Michigan makes that hard sometimes with the winter weather and I tend to sit and sew.

Everyone keep posting, I do check in regularly.....

If the institution, is so big that they can't take the time to write a personal thank you...I would be looking for another venue. There are too many kids that would benefit from our generosity.

June, we rarely get thank you notes.  The hospital has a large number of donations and sends a letter on an annual basis to everyone as thank you.  We are not allowed to ask for pictures from the hospital due to the privacy laws.  I have meet several of the nurses that work there and they tell us how wonderful the quilts are and how it brightens up the bed.  Recently learned that they have a wall of honor and will post picture of group so everyone knows who the quilts come from.

Can't believe some people would take quilts that are meant for charity.  How thoughtless.  Last spring our group gave several quilts to pediatrics at one of our local hospitals; never got a thank you from them.  That's odd, too.  Am I expecting too much?

That's criminal. What's the matter with people? That's like taking money out of the Salvation Army pot.

I'm a walker too. My dogs are very pushy. They know that a 9 AM we should be up at the walking path around two small lakes. It's a two mile loop. Sadly, my old Australian Shepherd can't go that far any more. So, I drive him home after the small lake and go back and finish with the younger dog. In the winter when it's  cold, snowy or icy we only do the little lake. I'd guess we miss about 5 days a year when I'm in town.

Yikes, we do need to think about where our donated quilts are going.  I'm hoping the good far out weighs the bad.  But still, quilts are a labor of love.

Another pet peeve of mine, is when someone  needs a donation, and says - thought you could just make us a blanket!  No idea of the time, effort and expense that goes into a quilt, which is not some ordinary blanket.

Good to hear from you, Dawn!  Really do appreciate your experience with donated quilts.  It was eye opening.

My long-arm quilter is moving as well.  She was so gifted and really spoiled me for anyone else.  She rarely did an all-over quilting design, but rather quilted them as if they were hand quilted.  The other LAers in my area just do the all-over quilting design with no regard to how the top is pieced.  Not sure what I'll do for the quilts I don't hand quilt.

I'm so glad you and your husband are exercising together.  It is always so much more fun to walk or bike with someone else.  I think I'm doing good getting in a 2-mile walk every other day or so, so I admire your goals.  My husband loves to bike, but it is hard on our gravel and dirt roads.  He likes to bike when he visits our daughter in town.

It is a busy time with gardens...I would have a hard time not confronting the lady with my quilts. It just shows how some people have sticky fingers. Shame on them!
