Quilt With Us

Spent part of the afternoon tearing apart my dishwasher, cleaning out all the hard water buildup from the various components and putting it back together. Not my first time. Hard water is a pain! So after getting the kitchen back in order, filling the now-hopefully-functional dishwasher, and putting DH's tools away, I sat down with a brownie, (still warm from the oven - my chocolate therapy for today), counted my blessings that there were no leftover parts and that I'm not stuck doing dishes by hand, and then ordered Lemi Shine, which is supposed to help dishwashers with hard water residue buildup. Does anyone know if I've been suckered? Does it work - not work? Any other suggestions? Believe me, I'm open to any and all helpful hints for dealing with hard water.

The men saddled up early this morning to gather and sort replacement heifers. They had some doctoring of pinkeye and foot rot to do as well. Had a nice, cool day to do that today. My 77 year old dad still lives to ride his horse and work cattle, but he didn't go today because he just had a heart cath last week. DH didn't want to risk anything happening to dad while he was on his watch. Dad was a little miffed about being left out. I say let him go. He'd rather die doing something he loves to do rather than sitting around the house or worse yet, in a hospital.

On the crafting front, I finished up a thread crocheted bedspread started in the 80's by DH's grandmother. When she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in the late 90's it was passed on to her oldest daughter. She worked on it for a time and then passed it on to the youngest daughter who worked on it and then passed it along to me. I've been working on it off and on for a couple of years now and decided it just needed to be finished. It fits a queen size bed and is definitely not a project I'd want to take on from scratch. It will go in DD's hope chest.

On the quilting front, I was able to get the final border on a twin sized quilt this afternoon (before the dishwasher fiasco). It was made from the Firecracker collection. I'm ready to start in on a new project. Maybe tomorrow - or maybe after another brownie...

I have used to clean my dishwasher, just make sure you follow the directions. I soak most things in cold water and viniger and have used white viniger in the dishwasher. My problem is getting a time when the thing is empty. Sounds like you were a busy beaver all day today and I agree about your dad, you only get to go around once and you may as well be doing what you like!

Good for you, fixing the dish washer. Would love to see the bedspread.

Is that the spread you posted a picture of last year with rows of different colors that someone else did that you weren't sure you liked? Or that may have been a thread crocheted tablecloth that someone else posted. I remember it was beautiful! Post a picture! Sounds like the dishwasher fiasco turned out okay, I used to have hard water buildup on everything where I lived before. It's almost impossible to get rid of, the two products I used to clean it the best was called Lime-Away, a liquid, and ZUD, which is a powdered cleanser like Ajax or Comet, but the ZUD is only good on hard surfaces that you can really scrub because it's very abrasive and will scratch most surfaces. The problem with most of the products to get rid of hard water residue, is that it eats the soft surfaces like rubber hoses and gaskets, so rinse really well after you're done. Though it's cheaper to replace hoses than the whole dishwasher! ;) As for Dad, I'm with you, let him ride! My Dad was the same way, would rather have gone to heaven while he was out doing something he loved, than sitting at home where it was safe in a rocking chair, my father-in-law is the same way. Now, go have another brownie! You deserve it! :)

my dad was a master plumber i have always ran a whole gallon of white vinagar through mine every couple of months to get and clean the parts you can't see its a good way to clean it all. always have worked for me now going on 40 years married. hugs ((((())))) i have soft water but do still do it as it cleans it well i start it and then let it sit 1 hour then turn it back on to let it finish its wash with out any thing in it.

PQ, I am so proud of you to be able to take your dishwasher apart and put it back together with no missing parts still left. Have you tried running some vinegar through it to clean out the hard water residue. Yes the water softener does make a big difference. Thinking we may have to invest in one some day soon. Yes, let Dad do want he wants to do and be happy doing it. About those brownies, I would really like one too. May have to make a pan of brownies tomorrow with some icing of course, maybe make the ones with the marshmallows too. If I am going to have calories, may as well have lots of calories eh? Still haven't made BJ's Snicker cake yet either. Can't make both though so one at a time. LOL

We had such hard water problems, that we installed a water softner...big difference. Those brownies sound soooooo goood...but after eating BJ's snicker cake, I'm on the wagon!lol When is Tell coming home? I agree, let your dad do what he wants. People walk out of having an EKG and have a heart attack. Hey...have a brownie before bed for me....
