Quilt With Us

I am dithering and would appreciate some advice.  I am making a small Baltimore Album quilt (from Mimi Dietrich's Baltimore Basics book) using the fabric from my guild's challenge for this year---not a lot of any one color, and it's in blue, red and tan, which isn't traditional, but if I have to do a challenge (and I'm president this year, so I do), I'm going to do one where I learn something i wanted to do anyway and I don't buy any more of the fabric.  Dithering part:  would you go ahead and cut the sashing from one of the fabrics and set it aside to start with?  Or would you make the blocks and then work with what's left over?  I think I should go ahead and cut it and put it aside--I'll know how many blocks I can make by how much sashing I have....

I agree, cut them first. There's less chance of disappointment later. :)

If you know how much you will need for sashings then I would cut them to assure having enough.  That's just my take on it.

Well you have picked a real challenge within the challenge! a mini baltimore that is alot of work and being president (congrats) too! you have many challenges to start

With most challenges you have to be able to identify the fabrics within the project so does that meet your criteria? do you really have to have a sashing? or could you have enough to do a mini swag to show the fabric it can be 2 of the fabrics and then complimentary in the middle for your blocks say the tan and blue and then red for the berries...

This just sounds like to much fun...you are going to find your way dithering is just the start play with your fabrics and the number of additions you are allowed to add. Would love to see the fabrics you have to use. Sometimes you can really get some uglies and then I am totally amazed what others do!

keep updating on your decision would love to know!

I'd do as the others have suggested.  May your dithers be few!

I have no words of wisdom, but as a fellow ditherer, I just have to stop in and say "Hi!" :D

Exactly what Handstitcher said. Perfect advice.

I agree with handstitcher. I also do this if I know what I will use for the border. So lets say I have 3 yards, I cut the vertical length the 3 yards by 6" wide or what ever I wish.

Handstitcher took my words!!!

If you know for sure what fabric you want for the sashing, I think I'd go ahead and cut it to set aside. Otherwise, you may not have enough. If you don't have to use one of the challenge fabrics for your sashing, then you might want to wait and pick a sashing after the blocks are finished.
