Quilt With Us

Has anyone had any experience working with football jerseys?  My niece would like me to turn a few jerseys into some kind of throw.  It is so different from working with t-shirts.  I am not sure how I could stabilize the fabric enough to work with it.  I am assuming they will melt if I try to use any iron-on product.  I would really prefer to not turn it into a tied quilt, since she does not plan for it to be utilitarian, more a keepsake.

Thanks, Roxann.  If I can't talk them into either using the jerseys for pillows, or framing them, I'll give it a go.  I've done t-shirt quilts, but really don't enjoy them.

I just had a customer quilt I quilted that had a mesh football jersey on it. I was scared to death to quilt over it but it was flawless! I was reading online and from what I found it said to use a lightweight fusible with a Teflon pressing sheet under the Jersey, low heat. Maybe you could try it with a piece of the Jersey you aren't using just to masure sure.

I've found the key to t shirt quilt for your sanity and your quilters when using fusible stabilizer, it will stretch just like fabric so when applying to fabric apply the stretchy way of the stabilizer to the non stretchy way of the fabrics. I hope that makes sense. And a good stabilizer is KEY to making it a breeze! Hope that helps!

Thanks, Pam!  I thought maybe I was just overthinking this project, but I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one that feels this way.  I am so worried about ruining a keepsake for them.  The jerseys are from a special exhibition game my niece's hubby played in Australia.  I would like to redirect her toward pillows, or framing the jerseys.

Barb, I feel your pain. I have worked with jerseys and they are rough. I used a pressing cloth to put stabilizer on them. I did not use the whole jersey. Cut around the symbol or words and applique that to background fabric. I also quilted over the top of the patch to give it more stability. I stopped doing t-shirt quilts. They are a lot of work! Unless of course, my two grandsons want one! lol
