Our guild has planned it's annual retreat for mid-June. Unfortunately, the powers that be have decided that, in order to make it affordable for all, we are not actually "retreating", but attending a daily sew-in at the local Veterans Hall for three consecutive days, lunch & dinner provided. A friend and I volunteered to do registration, payment collection, name tags and "goodie bags." We are supposed to plan for about 70 attendees -- not exactly my idea of a retreat, because we return home each evening, but so be it.
My friend and I have been diligently working on our assignment, with a $150 budget for name tags and goodie bags, etc. That's about $2.00 each attendee. We have been successful in soliciting some donations from the LQS and members, which has made our task a little easier. The theme is tropical, "Tank Tops & Flip-Flops". This whole set-up is to show you the goodie-bag pincushions we have just finished - 75 of them - in that theme. The scraps are from my collection, also the buttons. These are "stuffed" with crushed walnut shells, donated to us by a local orchardist's mother and wife, who are in our guild. I think they really came out nice. The hardest part, surprisingly, was hand stitching the buttons through-and-through on both sides. My fingers are sore!

I've been to 2 retreats: 1st was at a lake in Oct when the tourist season gone. So cottage were reduced. Was beautiful fall leaves everywhere, bit cool but nice. Each cottage had 6-8 members. We each threw in a food item which was our meals. Then, the main cabin had all the cottage members come for a meal made by one cottage.
2nd retreat ws inside a htl boardroom but more expensive.
I joined the Veteran legion hoping they would discount for quilters to set up place for a wknd,
not a chance and the cost was too high so no one will come..
They are adorable,,and you did a great job..Carol.......Always think tropical no matter what temp it is outside..! Enjoy the time there! Chocolate it is...!
Thank Barb & PQ -- The pin cushions were the hardest part. The chocolate is going into the goodie bags too! There will be some other miscellaneous things. We can't use red wine; but me must have the chocolate at the retreat! Yes, now I want a REAL retreat where I can just pay my fee and go!
After all the work you are doing for the "retreat," you'll really NEED a retreat! :)
I am sure your retreat will be a great success! What a lot of work you and your friend have put into those beautiful pincushions. I think some wonderful chocolate would help heal those sore fingers.
Sounds like a fun time. I think registration and giving out goody bags is a great way to meet all the guests. I love the pincushions. It's always nice to have scraps and buttons during times like this.
They are lovely gifts. We quilters always seem to find a way to make things work, don't we?
They turned out great! I admire you for sticking to it with 70 pincushions! (Even if you are only doing a portion, that's still a lot of little bags!) Bless you for sharing your time and talents this way.
This is for Mid-June in the Northern Great Valley in California, Peggy. We'll be lucky if it is under 100 degrees during the day! No freezing here!
