Quilt With Us

Just returned from a trip to Hawaii--something that was on DH's and my bucket list. DH wanted to see the Arizona Memorial and it was inspiring and sad at the same time. Hawaii really honors service men and women and is very patriotic. That was refreshing.

While on Mauai for a couple of days, I found a fabric shop the second day and purchased some great Hawaiian print fabrics and some Hawaiian applique patterns. I was overwhelmed with the selection of material available and could hardly make a decision about what to purchase. A very nice lady helped me and offered to give me a 3-hour class on traditional Hawaiian applique. Unfortunately, I did not have enough time to take her up on her offer. We were cruising the various islands and I didn't want to miss the ship! I am going to try it on my own sometime this winter. It looks rather difficult as the patterns are very intricate. Will post a picture when (or if) I get one of them done.

Too bad you had to miss that offer, but I understand what a tough choice you had - miss a ship or learn the applique! LOL

I lived and worked in Hawaii for 22+years. Kamuki Dry Goods has the best fabric selection on Oahu. It is in Kaimuki off the highway near Diamond Head. I took a hawaiian quilting class and that is where I learned how to hand quilt. And no I do not do hawaiian applique.

Sonya, looking forward to seeing your Hawaiian applique. Yes it looks very difficult as it is so intricate.

Welcome back! I've done some hawaiian applique - it's not as hard as it looks. There are some free patterns online that are simple and you can work up from there. I hope you show us! If you'd like, I could probably make a tutorial in a few weeks when I get some time

I went to Hawaii for my honeymoon, but I wasn't a quilter back then! I can only imagine the fabric! *sigh* I guess we'll have to go back!
