Debra,,, I always pin the center of both pieces, then match them up pin in place, also pin the edges.... make sure you place the bias side on the bottom,,  your feed dogs will not stretch the fabric  like your fingers can.

I make sure the beginning and end are at the correct place. I hold on to the spot. If large triangle make small "v" cut to mark the center.
