Quilt With Us

I have borrowed a Janome from a friend as my machine has gone for servicing. The Janome is an old machine with no manual and the friend has inherited it from her mother-in-law. She has no clue about the machine's features either. If anyone is familiar with old models of Janome can you enlighten me on these two points?

1. On the dial for stitch length there is a marking  with a + and a - on either side of 'ss'. What setting is this for.

2. Is it possible to do free motion quilting on this machine? If 'yes' how do I do it. There seems to be no lever to disengage the feeddogs.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks Shannon. Treading lightly is what I am trying - what is happening is something different.

you can download a manual for free at manualsonline.com.  I googled the machine, and that is what I found.  I signed in with my facebook acct.  it is pdf.

Then what about the numbers for stitch length? they also increase/decrease right. Anyway that was an academic question. I am more interested in stitching free motion. The machine speed is a bit disconcerting though - it is like a runaway train compared to my Juki. I don't know if I can stitch free motion at that speed.

1.  I believe "ss'" means "standard stitch".  Turning the dial to the "+" would lengthen the stitch, and turning to the "-" would shorten the stitch.

2.  If there is no way to lower the feed dogs, look among your accessories for a plastic cover that snaps over them.   Otherwise, you could tape a piece of cardstock over them to do free motion.

I don't have your model, but I did own an older Janome that had these features.
