How to survive winter in Iowa (some days of -23 degrees, before wind chills)

I had to reply to the post about getting through the cold - like the hat?! My kids roll their eyes when I put it on and walk out...poor pumkins! Here's how I do it... once it's under freezing here, like the low 30's, I start wearing my long underwear under my jeans and slacks. I also usually wear an undershirt, and then a top and then a sweater or sweatshirt. This is all for around the house, mind you, all day. Of course slippers, often, a scarf. Now that we have moved to the country and the garage is attached (what a great invention!!!) I go out and start the car (with garage door peeped open) for 10 minutes or so. Bundle up, with boots, etc. and head out. Yes, life usually goes on and out we go. School was canceled (school buses and young drivers are given a break here) but there was still sports practice, so I had to take the kids out for that. Teens, are another story, we'll probably find a few as popsicles once there is a thaw! We have a young man from Argentina living with us this year, who is thrilled by the snow, but does ask periodically what made people ever settle here. I have no earthly idea, at this point in the year...why didn't my Norwegain ancestors realize enough was enough and go SOUTH?!?!

Elaine, I know what you mean about "where are those mothers" but now I am one of them!! I refused to let one out of the house last week with only a faux leather jacket on (he tried to kill me with an evil eye - lol) and I actually told them all one day that I hoped they went off the road and that I couldn't get there right away and THEN they'd see that I was right! (My husband was totally aghast that I would actually say such a thing to the sweeties..teehee) ah well, this too shall pass (weather and teens!)

Love the hat!!!!! I'm in Vermont up near Canada. I drive a school bus, when we got to the bus garage on Fri. it was -28 degrees. Our buses started a little hard but down the road we went. I usually wear ski pants. The kids get a kick out of that. I'm not cold. Some of the kids are wearing just hoodies standing there with iclecles hanging from the wet hair. You just gota wonder what they are thnking and where are the mothers ?

lol...I'm a native Texan living in Minnesota. So I totally understand the meaning of freezing! I wear two pairs of socks all the way into May sometimes June. Everyone makes fun of me but hey, my feet are warm.

I live as far north as you can go in Wisconsin so we have had weather like yours and colder. Today was warmer with a high of 10 above 0 and 5 inches of fresh fallen snow. Felt like spring. This winter my husband and I have discovered flannel lined jeans; soft, cozy, and warm. They are great! Cabelas, Carhardt, and other brands carry them. Try them; I think you will like them.

Hi Lisa, Just read your post Burr cold, I live in southeast Iowa and it has been below zero the last couple of days. I'm suppose to put my trash out for pick up on Fri. It was even to cold to get out and go to the curb A pansy in my old age. You have a boy from Arg living with you is he with the A F S student exchange When my oldest daughter was in High School she was a forgien exchange student to Cost Rica what an experience for the young kids I take it he will get sick of the cold very soon HUH I think ithis is a record cold spell for Iowa or at least some parts. I live as far south and east as far as you can go and still be in Iowa Close to the new Ave of the saints Need to get something to eat so will say so-long for now and have a good day JES
