Quilt With Us

Here is the Hunter's star layout, before it was completely put together.  I like the balance.

The blocks finish at 8", so as is, this measures 32 x 40.  Question:  Is that big enough for a baby quilt?  I tend to make mine a little larger.  I'd feel better if this were 40 x 48, but I am not going to make 10 more blocks.  (Next time I'll know to make it a 5 x 6 setting.)  I had originally thought to put borders on it - a narrow border with a wider border to finish at 4" all the way around.  Something like the upper right in this picture:

However, DH preferred the quilt top without any borders.  His thought was that borders detracted from the center instead of showcasing the center.  He did not like the borders at all.  What do you think?

A:  Leave it as is at 32 x 40 (the binding will be turquoise).

B:  Add borders as in the picture?

C:  Make the last border a brown solid or the dark rust  (like a picture frame) instead of the print?

Great pattern, by the way!  I have a Hunter's Star cut out, but have only put together two blocks.  I'm saving it for a retreat or something where I can concentrate on correct assembly!  I hate frogging!

Okay, PQ, I will weigh in.  It's funny but when a DH makes his thoughts known, we begin to question our own preferences.  I agree that it needs a solid color border rather than using the center background.  That will make the center pop and also make the quilt a little bit larger, as you would prefer.  You could make the turquoise inner border 2" (finished) to give it more width.  I would look at using the dark blue for the outer border instead of brown, but that's hard to tell from the photo of the fabrics.  I'm also interested in the green or gold.  I prefer the brighter colors for baby quits, and hardly ever use brown for them.

Thanks, Connie!  I'm going to audition those.

Thanks, Peggy, that's what I originally thought, too, and may still go with it.  I'm always interested in what each one thinks and why.  After DH's comment, I started to doubt my choice.  I sometimes have tunnel vision, and just need to take a step back and broaden my view.  You all help me do that.  I'm hoping for lots of feedback.

You're going to be sorry you asked, as we each will have a slightly different preference. I prefer the turquoise inner border and the background outer border, so the blocks in the middle float. We'll see what the next person says. :-}

C. It needs a dark outer border to set off the star blocks. I like the turquoise and either brown or rust would finish it off.
